Vincent comes out swinging against Dwight on Day One

Written by Brad on August 11th, 2009

Vincent Sheheen hasn’t wasted any time pointing out new contestant Dwight Drake’s vulnerabilities. Dwight did a conference call with journalists at 1 p.m., and at 3:24 Vincent sent out this:

Sheheen’s Statement on Democratic Primary

Camden, SC – State Senator and Democratic candidate for governor Vincent Sheheen today issued the following statement regarding the Democratic primary for governor:Which candidate can return trust to the governor’s office?  That is the ultimate question that South Carolina voters must decide.

“In the South Carolina Senate, I have focused on fighting the special interests and insider politics that too often control our government in Columbia at the expense of the people. Whether it be predatory lenders, big tobacco companies, or environmental polluters, I have been willing to stand up to them — and stand up FOR hard-working South Carolinians and our families.

Next year, we have the opportunity to end business as usual and elect a new governor who will put the people of this state first.  South Carolinians deserve a state government that will reward their faith and hard work with good jobs and strong public schools.

Democrats in South Carolina must make a statement about the values of our party and of our state. The future of the Democratic Party and the quality of our state government in South Carolina is at stake.

In this election, Democrats must carefully choose a candidate who represents our values and the values of South Carolina.  We must make a new start, with a new direction and vision to rebuild our state. This is our chance and we cannot afford to miss it.”

I told you this was going to be interesting, and it already is.

And just in case you missed WHO Vincent was talking about with all that stuff about Big Tobacco and all, his Camden ally Rep. Laurie Funderburk sent out this release at 12:01 today:

Dwight Drake has a well‐earned reputation as a top lobbyist in this state. Unfortunately, he has built his career, in large part, by protecting the status quo for powerful special interests like big tobacco, nuclear waste, and payday lending. Drake cannot allay legitimate concerns about his ability to fairly represent the best interests of the citizens of this state in any
issues that involve his controversial clients.
This election is a critical opportunity for Democrats to be in a position to make a positive difference for South Carolina and our future. Drake is not the one to lead that charge.

A very lively election season we’re having already…

See the last post in the DD thread by cracker.

Brad, who is Heyward Harvin and how dirty is he?

  3. Lee Muller says:

While you are a free man, able to write about the election without an employer lurking over your shoulder, why don’t you try to think outside the box of this as an athletic contest.

The more sophisticated audience quit reading newspapers long ago because they tired of blow-by-blow stories in the horse race and football templates.

  4. Randy E says:

Lee, you apparently still subscribe to The State.

  5. Brad Warthen says:

I don’t know Heyward Harvin. A search led to this post by Tim Kelly, but that’s more than I know…

  6. Brad Warthen says:

In an effort to learn more about Heyward Harvin in response to Randy’s question, I’ve made friends with him on Facebook.

    Devious, ain’t I?

  7. Randy E says:

Brad, I picked up on that name from the bottom of the Who is Dwight Drake page link “cracker” posted on the Dwight Drake’s running thread. At the bottom is the line “paid for by Heyward Harvin.” In a subsequent search I found a Carolina boy who was a field operator for Bill Richardson.

Regarding your deviousness, Meryl Streep in the movie “Doubt” said “when confronting evil, one turns from God.”

  8. Brad Warthen says:

    How was the movie?

  9. Randy E says:

Excellent. Seymour Hoffman and Streep are great. As a Catholic, I found the plot and the theme hit home – both in a good and difficult way. It’s set in 1964 so I think it may extra meaning for you.

I don’t want to give anything away in case you want to see it.

    Extra! Extra!

Third generation, raised-from-a-pup politician battles lobbyist for governor!
