Well, we can rest easy now. Never mind that it’s more than disconcerting for the guy responsible for signing all state checks to be indicted on drug charges. It’s all taken care of.
No, I’m not talking about Ken Wingate being named as a sort of interim interim treasurer. That’s all very well and good on the part of the governor, but over in the Senate they’re talking about attacking the real problem.
It has come to my attention that Sen. Harvey Peeler has proposed a bill to require that all candidates for constitutional office be drug-tested.
The Senate can’t bring itself, after all these years and the last two indictments of such politicians, to face the fact that such purely ministerial officials as, say, the agriculture commissioner should not be elected to begin with, but hired — with all the resumes and interviews and reference-checking that process requires.
No, we won’t let the elected chief executive run the executive branch, but by golly, we’re gonna check and see if these jokers are puttin’ anything up their noses. Yessirree Bob.
Maybe we could ask The State newspaper owners to also start drug testing their employees. Half the garbage I read in it makes me think that the writers are on something.
Now you’ve gone to messin’…
“Maybe we could ask The State newspaper owners to also start drug testing their employees. Half the garbage I read in it makes me think that the writers are on something.”
LOL! I’m with ya Bill…
Thanks Harvey, someone always proposes legislation that seems like a good idea in the wake/aftermath of a very unfortunate or very anomolous incident and it turns out to be a ridiculous and stupid idea with more hindsight. This is a stupid idea even now, in the heat of the moment. Sen. Peeler needs to have his knee jerk reactions with stupid comments at dinner parties like everyone else and not do it on state time with foolish legislation.
Peelers’ lunacy is emblematic of the ridiculous depths to which our legislature has sunk: Forest fire sized problems rage all around them and circus clowns like Peeler throw teacups of water at smoldering matchstems. Hey Harvey…all the stuff you SHOULD be doing has you surrounded…you can fire in any direction, and believe it or not we already have laws against cocaine possession and use. Stop trying to answer questions nobody asked why don’t you and focus on a REAL problem. Go ahead and surprise us…pick one. Ed
I’d one up Harvey. Every legislator should have to pass a drug test and blow under .08 before he/she votes.
Ed…
Very well said.
Terry
Sand Hill, just so…and Peeler should be the first one on the breathalizer. If his ridiculous proposal doesn’t warrant suspicion of intoxication, I don’t know what would. Ed
Way to GO Bill C. My sentiments exactly.
Put me down in the pro “drug testing State Newspaper employee’s” camp. The front page has become a laughing stock.
This doesn’t change the point of the post, but as Brad’s source on the bill, I need to make a correction: It covers all candidates for office, not just candidates for constitutional office. I misheard when the title was read across the desk (the text wasn’t available until last night). You can read the bill at http://www.scstatehouse.net/sess117_2007-2008/bills/853.htm
