WashPost: CIA helps Pakistan, India work together on Mumbai case

Today I got a release from The Washington Post touting a good-news story that for me explained a lot:

The Washington Post today reports that in the aftermath of the Mumbai terrorist attacks, the CIA orchestrated back-channel intelligence exchanges between India and Pakistan, allowing the two former enemies to quietly share highly sensitive evidence while the Americans served as neutral arbiters.

The exchanges, which began days after the deadly assault in late November, gradually helped the two sides overcome mutual suspicions and paved the way for Islamabad's announcement last week acknowledging that some of the planning for the attack had occurred on Pakistani soil, report Joby Warrick and Karen DeYoung.

The intelligence went well beyond the public revelations about the 10 Mumbai terrorists, and included sophisticated communications intercepts and an array of physical evidence detailing how the gunmen and their supporters planned and executed their three-day killing spree in the Indian port city.

Indian and Pakistani intelligence agencies separately shared their findings with the CIA, which relayed the details while also vetting the intelligence and filling in blanks with gleanings from its networks, the sources said. The U.S. role was described in interviews with Pakistani officials and confirmed by U.S. sources with detailed knowledge of the arrangement. The arrangement is ongoing, and it is unknown whether it will continue after the Mumbai case is settled.

As I've read reports in recent weeks about Pakistan making arrests and acknowledging the involvement of its nationals, I've sort of wondered at the back of my mind why this case has proceeded without a lot more tension — and maybe actions that went beyond tension — between these too long-time adversaries. Think about it — we could have had a nuclear war in the region by now. Then I read this.

This is just the kind of thing you HOPE your government is secretly doing, but you fear that too often it is not…

This is exactly the kind of example of the ways America should be leading in foreign policy, that there are more ways to attack a problem than clumsy military ones. Since this happened on Bush’s watch, I give him credit.
And speaking of that, those of us who relentlessly (and justifiably) criticized W for misguided policies in world affairs, we need to go on record and praise W loudly for one of the wisest decisions of his Presidency, and it came very late: his point-blank refusal to allow Israeli fly-overs and refusal to give bunker-busting bombs to Israel for a possible attempted attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Here, I’m gonna take a deep breath and say it: Bravo to you, George W. Bush.

Jimmy Carter created this mess, and Clinton was afraid to deal with any foreign policy issues in the Middle East.
Carter funded the Muslim Brotherood, which became the Taliban.
Clinton funded and armed Muslims in Bosnia to created chaos for Serbia. Clinton got rid of Milosovec, but at a cost of 250,000 Jews and Greek Orthodox in Bosnia, Albania and the rest of the Yugoslavia that he restored into Balkan states. He armed Al Qaeda and trained 15,000 more of them to fight us in Iraq.

Funding jihadists? Killing thousands upon thousands to remove the bad guy? You make Carter and Clinton sound like Reagan and W. Bush.

Reagan cleaned up as much of the Carter mess as he could.
GW Bush cleaned up a lot of the Clinton mess.
A lot of tin-foil hat loonies sloganeer about “arms for Contras” and “George Bush flying to Tehran in an SR-71 Blackbird”, but that is all there is to it – all fantastic lies, as a diversion from the complicity of Democrats with Stalinism, Nazism, communism, and Islamic revolutionaries.
The chatting class of wealthy white Democrats and their entourage of wannebees are infatuated with helping revolutionaries with propaganda and taxpayer money. They don’t risk their necks in pursuit of their fantasies.

Bush may have learned something from all his failures. His refusal to grant a pardon for “Scooter” Libby says a lot about his change in character. So Bush set the tone before he left office. And apparently Obama has does some nice follow-up work. This is all good news.

Libby was not the source of the leak about Valerie Plame, and the prosecutor knew the source while continuing a phony investigation for two years.
Joe Wilson is the one who lied about Saddam Hussein not trying to obtain uranium right up to 2001, in his NY Times article. His official report to his superiors acknowledged that Iraq was trying to obtain uranium, which would indicate they had some sort of nuclear weapons development program still in operation.
By the way, Valerie Plame was not a CIA agent. She was an analyst. I was able to learn her identity throught the FEC from her illegal campaign contribution to John Kerry through the front company for whom she worked. She and her coworkers compromised their operation, which had to be shut down.
