The Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate

You’ve probably never seen him before, but here he is, on ABC news video.

He thinks he’s going to win. Against Jim DeMint. And why not? He just won the Democratic nomination.

There’s a pretty obvious explanation as to why this candidate who no one knew anything about won a Democrat primary against the other candidate that no one knew anything about.

Many voters will have no clue who to vote for or even who is running until they pick up their Sunday-before-the-election newspaper and look at the candidates spread, which usually include pictures of the candidates.

Carol Fowler has a lot of ‘splainin to do.

There is really no excuse for a major political party letting something like this happen.

There is no excuse that the Democratic Party can’t come up with enough candidates for every race in the state to be contested.
They will never get anywhere until they show they are serious enough to do that.

Lots of questions come to mind from this situation:

    – How is it that the incident between Mr. Greene and the college student happened in November and nothing was done between then and now?

    – How many other people are wandering around the USC libraries using old student id’s?

    – While what Mr. Greene allegedly did was vile and indefensible, is it really a felony level crime? At least according to the account I read from the victim, it didn’t seem like there was any threat of physical harm, just stupid obscene behavior. There’s a lot of guys in bars in Five Points who act in a similar manner every Friday night.

    – What kind of deals do you think the Democrats are trying to make with Mr. Greene to get him to quit? Cynical old me thinks someone will offer to make the charge go away (and drop off a brown paper bag filled with cash) if he drops out.

    – If Mr. Greene drops out, will Mr. Rawl’s name be on the ballot or will Demint run unopposed? I would think it would be very difficult to put up an alternate candidate unless Mr. Rawl wants to hear “You couldn’t even beat THAT guy” for the rest of the summer.

    – What would the over/under be on the percentage of votes Mr. Greene will get if he stays on the ballot? I’d put it at about 30%.

I had no clue this race was contested, and I even bothered to look up the official roster (or so I thought). Perhaps I should have gone with my gut and voted for Vic Rawl because he has a cooler name, rather than leaving this race blank.

“How many other people are wandering around the USC libraries using old student id’s?”

I don’t think you need an ID to get in, unless that’s changed in the past few years.

    @Kathryn

My mistake. It was a computer lab.

“Greene was accused of showing obscene images to her last November in a computer lab. According to a police report, Residence Life officials at the university said Greene was using an old Carolina Card to gain access to the lab.”

  7. Kathryn Fenner

Ahhh….must have been a residence hall computer lab as well–now that’s scary!

There is ongoing speculation that Alvin Greene is a GOP plant used to ensure a patsy runs against DeMint in the fall. The plan is to get Republican voters to vote in the Dem primary for the obviously unqualified Greene hence denying Rawl the nomination. Since its an open primary nothing exists to prevent such a thing. Seems doubtful to me given the stakes in the GOP primary but they are just diabolical enough that this is not completely unthinkable.

Brad, this makes me think of the discussions awhile back when Doug was trying to give you scenarios under which you wouldn’t have been willing to endorse either candidate in a race. I think he may have suggested Andre Bauer vs Robert Ford. How about Jim DeMint vs Alvin Greene?!

  10. Brad

Utterly preposterous. More than twice as many people voted in the Republican primary than voted in the Democratic. This supposes that a bunch more Republicans were among that smaller Democratic number.

Under this theory, there are so many loyal Republicans out there (3 to 1? 4 to 1?) that Vincent Sheheen might as well quit now, because there’s NO hope for him against those kinds of numbers…

Which is why at USC most labs are now requiring users to log in. If you don’t have an ID, you don’t get past the log-in screen.

A variation of this would be to plant Greene in the hopes that he would win anyway since his name would appear first among the unknowns since they are listed in alphabetical order. Makes about as much sense as an unemployed nobody running ON HIS OWN with money he saved up in a piggy bank. Why would he do something like that?

  13. Doug Ross

How will they ever prosecute this case without evidence of what Mr. Greene allegedly showed the girl? This would be a very tough case to win, I would think, without that.

Jim Clyburn apparently thinks there’s some merit to the conspiracy theory…

  14. Michael P.

“Jim Clyburn apparently thinks there’s some merit to the conspiracy theory…”

That’s just because it’s what Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton keep telling him.

  15. martin

Doug, the Post and Courier is having lengthy stories about this because the girl is from Charleston. They have interviewed her and her mother and the suggestion is he got PTI.

Apparently, he and the girl were in a USC computer lab, he showed her the porn and started suggesting they go to her room. That’s when the law got involved.

  16. Kathryn Fenner

@ Michael P.—“That’s just because it’s what Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton keep telling him.”

Got any proof of this, or are you just making baseless accusations?

  17. Brad

Bud, you could have a point. And maybe Clyburn does, too.

A grand conspiracy makes as much sense as any other explanation.

But I still have to wonder: Yeah, a conspirator can put up the filing fee. But how do you get all those people to VOTE for these guys?…
