And as we draw to the close of a slow news week in SC but a decent one elsewhere (considering it’s the dead of summer), here are the headlines:

  1. Stocks Tumble on Weak Earnings, Data (WSJ) — That’s the market for you. And yes, Virginia, it’s going to be a long, mixed recovery.
  2. Obama cautious as tests continue on BP oil stoppage (BBC) — And well he should be, cap or no cap.
  3. iPhone 4 Buyers To Get Free Cases To Fix Signal Woes (NPR) — As a PC guy, I gotta admit to a certain rush of Schadenfreude seeing Steve Jobs on the hot seat. But he’ll be OK. And Apple will continue to have the coolest new gadgets. Just as Toyota will continue to have the most reliable cars.
  4. Geithner to inherit sweeping influence (WashPost) — Something for you finance fans.
  5. Boeing picks fixtures plant site (P&C) — Yeah, I know this is a day old, but I missed it yesterday, and it’s local.
  6. S.C. tax receipts jump in quarter (thestate) — Ditto with this. If the trend holds, that billion-dollar cliff the governor keeps warning about when the stimulus funds (which he didn’t want anyway) run out is going to be whittled down considerably by the time the next budget has to be written.

Here’s why Nikki Haley is smart to avoid the Chamber of Commerce:

The FBI and the Internal Revenue Service have launched criminal investigations into $239,500 worth of campaign contributions given last year to political action committees and area politicians, including former gubernatorial candidate Gresham Barrett and members of the Myrtle Beach City Council.

The FBI and the IRS want to know where the money came from and why the donations were made in the form of cashier’s checks purchased at Myrtle Beach-based South Atlantic Bank.

The contributions purportedly were given by 14 corporations with ties to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.”

What the Chamber of Commerce really does is work in conjunction with legislators to implement tax policies that directly benefit specific businesses with political connections. And by “work with” I mean provide kickbacks, screw the taxpayers, and act unethically.

50+ killed in Iraq in the past 24 hours. Hope Obama doesn’t get cold feet and stop the withdrawal.

Nice shout out to Brad by Cindi Sunday! Wish there had been more fruit of his labors in exposing corruption and proposing solutions,
but as far as the majority of voters of SC go, if chump don’t want help, chump don’t get help!

Did anyone see the Alvin Greene speech? I missed it but the accounts I’ve read suggest it was pretty disturbing.

Alvin Greene speech: from what I read in The State, he said the same things other pols say, just without the obscuring verbiage, and went off message once to rant about a certain case where someone wasn’t allowed PTI (pretrial intervention), despite being otherwise eligible (fair enough point). He’s no Sarah Palin, but then….

Watch the speech. It will only take 7 minutes. It was a train wreck. The sad thing was that there were people who watched it and allowed themselves to be videotaped with comments about how well he did. Let’s just say that if Mr. Rawl had given the same speech with the same delivery, he would have been crucified by the same people. Identity politics indeed.

Or the soft bigotry of the same low expectations.

Lower the bar and you get what you deserve.
