Today we saw a string of news developments of the sort that cause a lot of people to believe erroneously that all, or most, public officials are shady.
It was quite a run:
- The internal affairs chief of the state Department of Public Safety, Bobby Collins, was fired, three weeks after being stopped on suspicion of drunk driving three weeks ago. Note that his job was to be the cop who watched the cops.
- Elgin Town Councilman Norman Allen “Bubba” Ernst was charged with vandalizing a gun range. I don’t even know how a person would go about doing that, and the story doesn’t say.
- Ex-Rep. Thad Viers was charged with burglary. Which, to my memory, is a first for a state legislator, even a former one. But I stand ready to be corrected.
Sheesh.

Like this development from 2001, perhaps:
“[State’s Chief Justice Cited for Hitting Vehicle, Leaving Scene] Toal was cited in 2001 for leaving the scene of an accident after she “didn’t remember” side-swiping a parked car near her downtown Columbia home. Toal admitted she had been drinking earlier in the night, but insisted alcohol did not factor into the crash.” FITSNEWS and – http://www.wltx.com/news/story.aspx?storyid=48264

We live in SC, one of the top 10 most corrupt states in the nation…it might be time to take off the rose-colored glasses.
Oh Man, I think I went to school with Bubba Ernst. He is the right age, but I wouldn’t recognize him from that picture. His big brother was in my class.
Maybe Atticus can help him out with his situation…
