I ended my Sunday column with the sentiment that the 12 or so senators who have been trying to save the republic from a "nuclear" meltdown over judicial nominations were "heroes in my book," just for trying. (Note that I say "12 or so" instead of using the even dozen cited in the column because some reports indicate at least peripheral involvement in the negotiations by more than that number.)
Since writing that, I’ve thought of another way to characterize the small band of grownups who have been working so hard to avoid damage to the Senate and 
judiciary: They are models of what the Senate should be, and has too seldom been in recent years.
In fact, here’s a modest proposal: How about we just ditch the other 80 or so partisans, ideologues and spineless sheep who are willing to let their hallowed body charge off a cliff together, and start over with just the admirable few who have been willing to do the country some good?
One Washington Post story referred to them as the "gang of twelve," but trying to identify them is about as hard as coming up with consistent names for the 12 apostles by gleaning through the Gospels. Some names appear in some contexts, others in others. The one story I saw that specifically named 12 was by the Sacramento Bee. Here are the names:
- Robert Byrd of West Virginia
- Mike DeWine of Ohio
- Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
- Mary Landrieu of Louisiana
- Joe Lieberman of Connecticut
- John McCain of Arizona
- Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
- Ben Nelson of Nebraska
- Mark Pryor of Arkansas
- Kenneth Salazar of Colorado
- Olympia Snowe of Maine
- John Warner of Virginia
But other stories refer to others, including:
- Susan Collins, the other senator from Maine
- Kent Conrad of North Dakota
- Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania
Sure, some of these are folks who have done objectionable things in the past (although some, such as Sens. McCain and Lieberman, are consistent heroes of mine). And there are some otherwise good people among the sheep who are charging toward the edge of the cliff.
But for this moment, I choose to honor the 12. Or 15. Or whatever.
As for Messrs. Frist, Reid, and the rest … well, they’re so into partisanship, maybe they could find nice jobs at party headquarters, licking envelopes or such.

I also choose to honor the 12, particulalrly Sne. Graham, whom I admire. I think he is doing a great thing. It is wonderful that someone cares enough about our country and the United States Senate as an institituion to buck the party and the flood of phone calls he is reciving.
I saw his ability to be a great Senator from the first time I saw him on the Senate floor. I cannot tell you why, I just thought so. He had impressed me, not an easy feat. I consider him a statesman and not a mear politician. I beleive that South Carolina is blessed to have such a wonderful leader in their midst and sent him to the Sneate.
I really like the independence. I hope we get a deal.
I was no fan of Sen. Graham early on, but he has consistently shown himself to be willing to put principle – and the good of the country – above partisanship. Since I’m a Democrat, I’m sure my Republican friends will say, “You like him because he cooperates with Democrats.” Well, they’re right, but Graham’s attitude and actions are refreshing anyway.
I’ve met Sen. Graham on several occasions and he didn’t come off as your typical politician.
Take that for what it’s worth.
As for the 12 on the list, I find it hard to object to any of them (except maybe Byrd and his Pork addiction). Of course, it’s hard to argue with a list that’s split 6 and 6 between the Donkeys and the Elephants.

It’s great to know you have such disdain for volunteers who spend time working for ideas and candidates they believe in.
By the way, Senators who know what they believe in and stand up for it are not sheep.
Its pretty easy to talk shop with a couple moderate senators and then call up your buddy at The State and tell him what a great guy you are for “negiotiating” when you are just gonna vote for the nuclear option if it comes down to it.
Maybe Senator Graham should spend a little more time with the folks who elected him and a little less time raising money in Atlanta.

What really bothers me is the contempt you have for political parties. It sounds like you wished none existed, and that only the editorial boards would be the source of information on candidates. I think political party affliation is an important piece of information for the voters. I’m sure if you could design a political system you would make every race “non-partisan.” But you ignore the fundamental premise of every election: everyone is partisan for someone because their candidate is from their hometown, high school, religion, or mother’s maiden name. And besides, political parties are so regulated now that there is almost no way for them to skirt election law. Would you rather unregulated 527’s with their millions of secret dollars be the dominant voice in our political debate? I’ll take a partisan Democrat or Republican any day over someone who hides in the shadows of MoveOn.org or Progress For America.
This big ‘tragedy’ in the Nuclear meltdown is something I look forward to. For two long there has been a stalemate and polarized pitched battle. We are just putting off the results. Now putting conservatives on the court, fiddling with social security, and just wait for Medicare’s 2006 Drug benefit THIS will give effect to the cause of electing the folks in office now. Overturning ROE v Wade and allowing pharmacist to withold brith control pills will provide the ‘effect’ in a very real way. Maybe they want not being able to choose? Maybe they want to be told to go to another pharmacy for their birth control pills? Maybe they won’t mind a drug benefit that isn’t? I think we need resolution. I am tired of pitched battles that go no where. I hate tennis too!
Praising the twelve (or 15) is not bemoaning political parties or belittling those who advocate for their views (left, right or center). Rather, it’s celebrating the fact that the nation and the Senate work best when compromise (with the majority party getting more out of the compromise than the minority) rather than brute force or obstructionism dominate. And Senator Graham is one who deserves tremendous praise. He is unquestionably conservative, but he has also always understood that the interests of governing the nation come first — and that to get 90% of your agenda while gaining substantial consensus is far better for the nation than getting 99% of your agenda and building divisiveness.
And let no one believe other than that the Republicans get more out of this than the Democrats (as they should have as the majority). Several (well-qualified) conservatives get to the federal bench, and it will be very hard politically for the Democrats to block any reasonable conservative nominee to the Supreme Court without looking utterly two-faced.
The Republicans did not get much at all out of the deal. Three out of who knows how many judges will get up or down votes. Not much of a victory there.
Furthermore, Graham went on TV and radio promising that the senate was going to have an up or down vote on John Bolton that week because of this brilliant compromise. He also said that Social Security Reform would now happen in this spirit of cooperation. There is one promise down the drain, now lets see about the other ones.

The picture apparently incited a rage within my “neighbor”, & with only that picture, Cary Stewart decided I must be a crook (to have such a nice house!).
Whereupon, Cary Stewart PUT me out business, & left me homeless (to this day)!

Halliburton was scheduled to take control of the Dubai Ports in The United Arab Emiirate. The deal was canceled when Bush was unable to affect the transfer of the American Ports.
