You know, all week I’ve thought about posting something about the Newberry College ex-Indians and the NCAA, and that appallingly lockstep faculty vote in favor of this absurd dictate, but it’s just TOO ripe.
The whole situation puts me in mind of something Tom Wolfe once wrote — I forget where — about the "Fool-Killer" walking away in bewilderment, dragging his club, overwhelmed by the enormity of his opportunity…
Basically, I hate Kulturkampf topics such as this one, and I generally just turn away. That’s because on the one hand, I don’t care what Newberry College calls its sports teams, and on the other hand, I’m flabbergasted that someone would try to TELL Newberry it has to change that name, and offer no rational reason for said ultimatum — or at least, none that I’ve read so far. Then, on the third hand (see how irrational this is?) — if I were Newberry, I would simply ignore the NCAA and do what I wanted. But then, I don’t care anything for what any sports organization has to offer, since I have the unconventional point of view of seeing sports as games. In other words, if you care enough about the NCAA to let it boss you around, your priorities are sufficiently out of whack to make me have little sympathy for you.
Now that I’ve offended everyone involved, I’ll turn this topic over to you, the reader:
Brad, You are dead on point about the Newberry nonsense. Yet, you pander to other politically correct groups like the smoke Nazis and the MSM’s obsession with trying to paint S.C. as the racist capital of the world.
Actually, Richard, what I do is say what I think. And what I think is that I don’t like stupid stuff.
Telling Newberry they can’t be the Indians is stupid.
Flying the Confederate flag on the State House grounds (assuming that’s something to which you are alluding) is stupid.
Getting all worked up over Robert’s cartoon yesterday is… ummm… overly sensitive…
Sorry about that last. Couldn’t help myself. Peer pressure. I’ve been working with Robert for too many years. He and all the other kids were doing it…
The ncaa is a leftist organization staffed by academic socialists. Its misson is to punish colleges and universities that do not toe the party line of political correctness.
It alone decides which cultural symbols are heretical and hammers those schools with the post season participation axe. The ncaa is tyrannical, anti White and anti Southern and anti American.
The danger such nonsense portends is which cultural symbols and terms will the ncaa attack next. With their black coaches mafia they have been after Southern symbols since these hurt their melanin feelings.
When they run out of Southern mascots to execute, will they turn to cultural names they brand as racist, like Washington and Indiana, or maybe just people whose names begin with the same letter as one of their hated symbols and live in racist state–like W, so maybe after Warthen next.
Hmmm. I don’t think you’re helping us chart a sensible, non-extreme course in this discussion…
You nailed it…is it just a game. I am embarrassed that the men of America think these games are so important.
Perhaps if they got off their fat asses and played a game everyonce in a while we would not be a country of pot bellied viewers, but of in shape doers.
Real men play games, fakers watch it.
You’re absolutely right, Eric, and, ummm… I think I’ll run down and do 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer in the basement before I do the Saturday Opinion Extra…
Ah, now we have our arbiter on the ever slippery slope of ‘stupid’ and examples of that heinous disease.
Isn’t cultural relativity, re franz boas, the moral principle the radical egalitarians regard as the primal base of social and cultural tolerance?
Of course, the self annointed they will decide what is best for the rest of the unwashed masses. Scratch a leftist socialist, find a tyrant in waiting.
But no doubt, and Yes, number 1 on the list of the truly heretical is that confederate flag, a sinister symbol that crushes PC sensitive souls daily, flying in honor over the monument to Southern Independence exemplified by the Southern Soldier. A perfect location for its Southern significance, and as the symbol of independence and freedom throughout the world democracies.
Knowing that haters of the South and its culture turn on their neanderthal cognitive processing when the rightness of the out group is the commanding reality, nevertheless, ponder this:
White men would not kill each other to own africans, that is stupid; but they would fight to the death to be told they could not own what they wanted, or maybe name their sports teams after warriors they respected.
And they would fight to the death when invaded by scorched earth military attila backed by a federal lincoln tiberius maximus.
There is another convincing Southern reality other than that of the leftist socialist pampered sweet things of the academic professional class and their acolytes.
America is good. The South is good. White people are good. Choose goodness, not victim pity party madness, make all better, stop the whine, do the right thing, be your best good example and quit complaining and find something good to be proud of.
Does anyone beside me not see the hypocrisy here? The NCAA moved its headquarters to
INDIANapolis, INDIANa several years ago.
The City and the State are named after Indians for chrissakes. Now they are mandating a small college in SC who is 150+ years old to cease and desist using Indians? How stupid an organization is this?
The next thing that the NCAA will ban is the use of animals as their mascots.
