GOP leadership continues war of words with Sanford

Just got this release a few minutes ago from Bobby Harrell’s office:

State Needs True Transparency, Not Pandering
Governor proves statewide fly around is about headlines, not delivering true reforms

(Columbia, SC) – Today, Governor Sanford embarked on another statewide fly around to hold a series of press conferences.  Upon learning that the governor’s intentions were only to make a media splash instead of fighting for real reforms, House Speaker Bobby Harrell gave the following statement:

“I have always supported more transparency and responsibility in government.  More transparency is good for our state, and more roll call voting in the General Assembly would be a good idea, but we must be fighting for true transparency and not just pandering to voters and grabbing for headlines.  In the House, we believe in working together to accomplish real transparency.  That’s why the House has passed earmark reform, spending limits, government restructuring, tax cuts and many other important reforms to our state government.

“Demanding that we should spend taxpayer money to take a roll call vote on a resolution congratulating a state championship high school team is not true transparency, it’s pandering.  Real reform in government is fixing the workers comp system, tort reform, and immigration reform, all of which became law because of actions by the General Assembly.

Tom DeLoach, President/CEO of South Carolina Business & Industry Political Education Committee (BIPEC), commented, “Roll Call voting in the South Carolina General Assembly is not uncommon.  In fact, over the last 10 years business and industry related roll call votes have increased significantly to the point where a roll call vote when not taken is an exception to the rule.  President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell and House Speaker Bobby Harrell have provided a roll call record on business and industry issues that is both plentiful and verifiable.”

Total bull… how about limiting roll call votes to any bill that involves spending tax dollars or implementing new laws? Should be able to weed out the meaningful ones from the others.
And, anyway, what business does the legislature have wasting ANY time on such frivolous junk like resolutions to recognize basketball teams. Maybe they should start doing real work instead of screwing around.

What is Bobby Harrell smoking? What’s he trying to hide?
Requiring roll call vote on all fiscal related bills should be the law of the land- like it is in so many other states.
To argue otherwise is almost impossible. I still am confused on the government restructuring and tax cuts he’s referring too. His shell companies and family might have benefitted, but the average joe has seen neither.

Claiming that it costs too much money to keep track of roll call votes has to be the lamest excuse ever given for secret votes to spend billions of taxpayer dollars.

    Brad,
Way to post the communist jargon of Bobby Harrell verbatim and add nothing to the discussion. You might want to step it up before you and your paper get booted.
And PS…Bobby is a JOKE. Nothing in the proposed legislation discussed statewide today had anything to do with nonbinding resolutions such as congrats for football teams……what a shame that we have this ignorant fool as our Speaker.

Bobby Harrell’s release is a flat-out miscategorization about what Nikki Haley’s voting on the record bill would do. Her legislation ignores trivial resolutions, but requires recorded votes on amended bills and each section of the budget. Ironically, that’s exactly what the speaker’s release says the law should look like – but the truth is he fears accountability and will do all in his power to kill this. Brad is smart enough to already know these facts, but apparently he figures you’re too stupid to catch him posting a lie or to at least ask for the Governor’s release along with it. Shameful.

Incredible stupid political stunt on Harrell’s part. Did he even read Haley’s bill? Obviously not.
He’s going to regret this down the line. His so-called power has been marginalized to the point that he’s putting his speaker’s seat in jeopardy in 2011. Oops.

Any legislation adding, modifying, or deleting the SC Code of Laws, SC Code of Regulations, or SC Constitution should require a recorded vote.
Resolutions and proclomations commending someone’s retirement, birthday, or accomplishment (individual or team), naming a day, week, or month for something, such as Basketweaver’s Month, and such, should just do a voice vote.

Brad, are you kidding me? I check back and you’ve edited my comments. If you are going to censor reader comments why ask for them in the first place? Go ahead and delete this posting…clearly your blog is a joke. I won’t bother reading or commenting in the future.

I have looked at Fits, and Brad’s column today, and it is clear the Governor’s people have a concerted effort to place anonymous blog comments at every opportunity. There is nothing illegal about this, but it is unseemly that Sanford would resort to this. Is he the Governor, or a candidate for village council?
The quality of the comments tells you the tenor of the Governor’s people. Small minded, verbose and frankly, childish. It leads one to believe he is not interested in passing transparency, just arguing about it. But of course, he never seems interested in passing legislation, only scoring points with the public.
We need mature leaders that will improve our lives. Will one step forward?

Brad, I owe you a serious apology. The comment below mine was very similar and I misread it as though you had edited the posting. I was wrong. I apologize.

    Frank writes referencing the Governor:

Well Frank we’ll just see who’s really interested in passing this piece of legislation. The Bill is on the table and there’s room for more names from what I hear.

Uh… “Frank”, old boy, you look like the one posting anonymous comments.
For whom do you work? Let’s see, it’s not Governor Sanford…

Frank- the only thing childish was the Speaker’s factually incorrect press release. Is he running for student council or mayor of importantville?

The General Assembly has an electronic method to record and display their votes. It is as simple as pushing a button. More time is probably wasted on a voice vote.

Now, now Ralph. We have to remember there are two buttons they have to choose from, Yea (green) or Nay (red). It’s a pretty confusing process and too logical for this crew.
