Wrapping up a busy week:

  1. Obama Assails Arizona Immigration Bill — The governor of that state has signed the most onerous legislation in the nation. It would allow cops to detain people, basically, for looking Mexican. This is significant because of the way it foreshadows the next big debate in the country over comprehensive reform. The way things are going, before long we in South Carolina, embarrassed as we’ve been in the past year, may start saying “Thank God for Arizona.”
  2. Dozens killed in Baghdad in revenge al-Qaeda attacks — Wave of bombings kills at least 58. This is supposedly in revenge for the recent killing of three senior al-Qaeda leaders by security forces. Typical of our enemies to take out their rage on the innocent.
  3. Defendant in N.Y. terror plot says al-Qaeda leaders ordered attack — And by the way, those people the Baghdad bombings are meant to avenge had plotted deadly attacks in the New York subway system.
  4. Nothing New in Benjamin Wreck Probe — But we should keep our eyes on this until things are clearer, from the police chief’s briefing to the condition of Ms. Rubens.
  5. The Man Who Shot Reagan Moves Toward Freedom — Interesting update on John Hinckley Jr., the guy who did it all for Jodie Foster.
  6. Prosecuting Pirates May Not Be Easy — Frankly, I sort of think we’ll have to go back to the “shores of Tripoli” approach, but it’s admirable that we try to apply the rule of law to lawless circumstances.

Thanks for the update on John Hinckley, Jr.

“At one point during the hearings, Levine [Hinckley’s lawyer] asked rhetorically whether people should be locked up for bad judgment in romantic relationships. Friedman [the judge] interjected: ‘We don’t have enough room.'”

If only we had enough room in South Carolina!

Anyone else catch this Colbert clip on the “Lindsey, come out of the closet” taunt made by the guest speaker at last weekend’s Greenville Tea Party rally? Enjoy…

And, if you want to read/hear more of what Mr Gheen had to say(since local media basically ignored the story) check out the link below. Not trying to offend anyone, but the TP’ers don’t impress, they repel.

Just wanted to share this with everyone. My wife and I just watched the story of Michael Oher, “The Blind Side”. Don’t know if the producers, directors, etc. took liberties with the true story or not but even if they did, it was the best 2 hours I have spent in a very long time.

If you haven’t seen the movie, by all means, take the time. My wife, who is a very perceptive person, reminded me after the movie was over, with all of the potential of Michael ending up in a bad situation, in the end, his good character prevailed. It was Michael all along, all he needed to succeed was an opportunity. And, someone with a good heart and who was totally color blind was there for him when it counted.

When football season comes around again, I will make a concerted effort to watch Raven games but with a slightly different perspective. It gives me hope for this old world when I know there are people like Michael and his mom and family are in it.

I will sleep much better tonight.

I reviewed a sneak of the film last fall. Bullock certainly deserved her Oscar nom. (Heads up — watch for Andy Garcia’s film “City Island” coming out soon. He’s phenomenal.)

One of the things about “Blind Side” that is revealed in a non-preachy way is the thoroughly Christian motives of those involved, This would be a good film for a Bible study or fellowship class to discuss.

“Blind Side” is pretty accurate, BTW.

Yeah, Libb, I caught that. I used to wonder about folks like Mr. Gheen, but he has now removed all doubt.

Biggest story this week BY FAR, and maybe this year was the oil rig blow-out. Coupled with the mining disaster in WV isn’t it clear that we need to move away from fossil fuels? Let’s put to rest the notion that we can extract coal and oil safely and without environmental damage. The conservatives look foolish when they try to claim that. Why Obama gave in to the right on the drilling issue is really baffling.
