Uh-oh — Sheheen has conceded Texas!

Over the weekend, I missed this ominous development (it went out on Saturday):

SHEHEEN CONCEDES TEXAS

Camden, SC–Today, Vincent Sheheen directed his campaign to withdraw all staff and resources from the state of Texas, effectively conceding the state to opponent Nikki Haley.  Haley continued her nationwide tour of ignoring South Carolina today by campaigning in Austin, Texas, where she is a featured speaker at a national Republican convention.

Sheheen for Governor Communications Director Kristin Cobb said, “Campaigning in Texas shows Nikki Haley’s primary concern is promoting herself and not solving South Carolina’s problems. Her mentor Mark Sanford’s flirtation with the national spotlight proved disastrous and South Carolina needs a change.”

“While Vincent Sheheen campaigns in the Pee Dee and the Midlands today, Nikki Haley is again ignoring South Carolina by campaigning in Texas as she runs for governor of the United States.”

On the one hand, I worry about Vincent conceding these major battlegrounds. What’s next? Ohio? Pretty soon, only SC would still be in play, and then where would we be?

On the other, I have to applaud him for his masterful application of the “Hit ’em where they ain’t” strategy. And in Nikki Haley’s case, the place that she ain’t is here. Even when she’s here physically, her mind, her focus, and every word she says is all about other places. Her aim is not on being governor of SC. In her mind, she’s won that, left office and moved on…

    I just realized that something I wrote above wasn’t quite right: “Even when she’s here physically, her mind, her focus, and every word she says is all about other places.”

    She’s not about “other places.” She’s about a place that doesn’t actually exist in the physical world. It’s a virtual universe that exists only inside the Beltway on 24/7 TV “news,” in the blogosphere and in press releases from the national GOP and related interest groups. A place that hovers, insubstantial but redolent, above Tea Party rallies.

    But no such place exists in the way South Carolina does…

    @Ralph | I wouldn’t be surprised by that.

    Honestly, I can’t say I blame Haley for not wasting her time in this state. The average guy turns on the news at 5 or 6PM and if he is in a decent mood he may watch it again at 10 or 11. The voters she is looking for just need to know a name when they go to the polls. They don’t care if they are in South Carolina or on the surface of the moon; a name is just a name.

    Honestly, this is high time to forget about Sheheen and brace for impact (until Haley decides to leave this state for bigger and better low-hanging fruit.

    The folks from ETV better quite and find jobs now.

    I’m afraid Jesse is right. Election time in SC is most often a case of “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, . . .” The story will end the same old way; and four years from now we’ll wonder why we haven’t made progress on the state’s major needs.

    Hey– I say Nikki does Sarah one better and quits halfway through her campaign! What better way to get on with her program!

    But didn’t SC want to be the Capital of CSA, and got miffed when it went to VA? surely she’s trying to get it back…
