Trying to catch up with my e-mail, I see that Wesley Donehue sent me this yesterday. I quoted McConnell’s statement in part earlier (or rather, quoted The State quoting it), but here is the whole thing. Hope you can read it OK:
As I said, he’s a guy taking a bullet for principle. He’s not enjoying himself.
Then why is it rumored that he’s already preparing to run for his Senate seat, and resign from the Lt. Governor position if he wins?
Yes, there was a lot of that sort of speculation flying around yesterday, but after hinting that there was something to it, McConnell squelched it:
“McConnell added that whoever succeeds him as Senate president pro tem ‘need(s) to understand they could be faced with a similar decision.’
“Later, at a news conference in Charleston, McConnell backed off that comment, telling reporters he would not file this year to seek re-election to his Senate seat.”
Of course, I think it would be fine for him to do that. I don’t think it would be dishonest. (And even if he did it, he still would have given up seniority, if I understand correctly.) But he has ruled it out.
In an era of slimy politicians who do whatever they want and come up with a post-hoc justification, McConnell’s decision is a reminder that there are some folks who do the right thing even when it’s hard.
His mother would be proud.
You need to read FitsNews, he’s got a whole article stating how this is all going to go down. When McConnell’s Senate seat goes up, he’s planning on running for it and when he wins he’ll vacate the Lt. Governorship. John Courson already has the votes to be appointed President Pro tem and wants the job of Lt. Governor.
Before all you “oh he’s doing the right thing” people start falling all over yourselves, remember this… McConnell is only doing this because it’s the legal way to do things, but it’s not in his big picture to stay and actually fulfill the duties of Lt. Governor. He’s working harder on how to get away from fulfilling those duties.
FITSNews is not “news” any more than Fox News is news. FITSNews is gossip and speculation, some of which is correct, but one never knows which part is correct.
