Darn Brad,
When I finally get to the point of really disliking you, you pop up something that is actually moderate and worth agreeing on. Hear! Hear! to the Lieberman victory, almost sounds like when dear old Strom ran as a “write in “, huh?
If the Dems hang on to narrow leads in MT and VA they win the senate but only if Leiberman sticks to his pledge to caucus with the Dems. That gives Lieberman enormous power. He can switch to the Republican caucus at any time and shift control of the senate. I like Leiberman in general but he’s so wrong on the war issue. Maybe this is his wake-up call and he’ll take another look at what we’re doing in Iraq.
The message to the entire political class from yesterday can be summed up in the punchline to an off-color joke I heard years ago: “OK, party’s over. Back on your heads!”
Enough fun and games for now. Back to work. . .
Yeah, sitting in Starbucks for one last coffee while trying to figure out how you’re going to pay the new taxes we’ll see shortly. Oh, and waiting for the next WMD to detonate in Manhattan. Ed
In response to Bud’s comments: Indeed, Joe Lieberman could continue his “Bush’s Democrat” approach or switch parties and become a Republican. The RNC did give Joe enough money for his campaign that they probably want some sort of quid pro quo. That being said, Lieberman has the “cheating spouse syndrome” right now. Meaning, Lieberman realizes that he cheated on his constituency and was caught in bed with the wrong people. Lieberman has done what any cheating spouse would do: distanced himself from the Republican (Minority) Party, rekindled his commitment to Labor (GOP is not big on Unions), and made new affirmations to the voters of the fine state of Connecticut. Most Democrats are very forgiving people of faith, everyone makes mistakes and most of us can get past Joe’s infidelity. So, he will be welcomed home as prodigal son as long as he keeps his promises.
Now if Lieberman can not resist the lure and does ultimately want to stick with the Republicans, the Republicans will probably give Joe his choice of Committee and Caucus appointments. But Joe’s problem is that he represents the good people of Connecticut and I doubt they will put up with him “cheating” twice. But if Joe truly wants to be with his “mistress” party and continue in politics as a Republican, he should wait until the Secretary of Defense Job opens up (Rumie resigns) and make his move then. If this happens close to this past election, Conn. will probably allow a special election for US Senate instead of a political appointment by the governor, but I doubt this will happen. Joe has come home to the Democratic Party as an Independent, and he will return to the Party once he’s proven his loyalties once again.
In response to Lee’s comments: If you believe what you wrote, “Democrat plan of just sitting in Starbucks and waiting for the next WMD to go off in Manhattan” then you must indeed truly live a very “blissful” life.
Thanks, J. Trabert
I like Starbucks. It’s a bit too pricy for me to go there very often but for a special treat it’s great.
All you right wingers shouldn’t be such sore losers. A split government is a good thing. It stops extremism. There will only be the slightest shift to the left politically. Perhaps the minimum wage will be increased and social security accounts will be forever shelved. Other than that we’ll probably (and unfortunatelly) still be in Iraq for 2 more years. Most of the tax cuts will be retained. But the good news is the extreme positions from the far, far right won’t see the light of day. And is that such a bad thing?
Bud, I ain’t no sore loser, and I actually kind of agree with you that the less mischief the government can get done, the better. But given my conservative bent, I don’t see how last night bodes well for this country generally. Not a sore loser, just a realist I think. Guess we’ll have 2 years to see. Ed
Ed, your taxes would have to go up 38% for you to pay into the federal treasury the same amount you take out in subsidies and handouts. South Carolinians get $1.38 in federal expenditures for every $1.00 they “pay” in federal taxes.
I’ve got postpartisan depression.Maybe I need a cup of coffee, but everyone tells be Starbucks is the Mal-Wart of coffee shops. For the most part,I’m pretty happy with the election results, but I’m also reading Cormac McCarthy’s latest,”The Road”,it’s about the end of the world, and it sounds all too plausible.
Ed, the country showed the Decider who makes the real decisions. They line item vetoed the GOP leadership. The collective voice of the people is a good thing.
His press conference was painful to watch today.
For my part, I just came from Starbucks. After little sleep the last couple of days, I have a banquet and a lecture to attend tonight. Gotta go, too, because I’m moderating a post-lecture panel discussion tomorrow afternoon.
Anyway, you ever notice that all of the women in Starbucks — the baristas, the customers — are beautiful? And all the people who aren’t beautiful women are quite interesting and worthwhile.
This realization hits me the moment I open the door and the aroma hits my nostrils.
Generally kooks and posers with enough money to pay $6.00 a cup for sanka and a dry “scone” or whatever. I’ve been to Starbucks, and I never really understood the draw. All the beautiful people do go there, and more to be “seen” than enjoy coffee I think. Ed
I go in old shorts, wrinkled t-shirt (Red Sox), and hat when I first get up to grade papers, prepare lesson plans, etc. Many others do the same.
The workers and patrons are very pleasant. The coffee is a little different than Sanka and the food is tasty (and fattening). I find good conversation with people who are taking a break from our busy world. Coffee shops have historically been such a gathering place.
I see high schoolers there on weekends and think that’s a positive place for them to hang out.
Sitting in Starbucks is an escape from reality… the perfect place for liberals to sit and pretend radical Islam has not been at war with them for 20 years.

But at least the coffee’s good.
It’s sort of like Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect getting in a couple or three last pints at a pub in the minutes before the Earth is destroyed.
If it’s gonna happen, and you’re not up for doing anything about it, might as well enjoy it…
