Here we go again

This came in today from the S.C. Republicans:

SCGOP Chairman Katon
Dawson’s Statement
on Democrat Fundraiser

Liberal candidates out of touch with South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Republican Party
Chairman Katon Dawson released the following statement on tonight’s South Carolina Democrat fundraiser to be held on Capitol Hill:

“As South Carolina Democrats stand tonight with ultra-liberal Democrat White House hopefuls, they should think about the conservatives back home they continue to alienate. Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd and John Edwards have long embraced higher taxes, federally-funded abortions and gun control and are out of touch with South Carolina voters. It’ll be interesting to see Jim Clyburn, John Spratt and other state Democrats jockey for face time tonight with these same liberal candidates they’ll try to distance themselves from next year.”

Set aside the partisan, ideological ranting, as offensive as that is. This is a political party; that’s what they do. But at least, it seems to me, they could do it in English. I had to respond thus:

It’s
"Democratic." Here’s how it works: Joe Biden is a Democrat. It was a Democratic
fund-raiser. The first is a noun, the second is an
adjective.

I don’t know what’s so tough about that.

Yeah, I know I’m trying to turn back the unthinking tide with a teaspoon. But sometimes, I’ve just got to try. One of these days they’ve GOT to get it, right?

I don’t even know what that spells, Randy. And if you do, shame on you. What are you, some kind of “ultra-liberal” wingnut?
    See you at church, brother.

Actually it’s not a Democratic fundraiser but a Democrat fundraiser, i.e. a fundraiser by and for Democrats.
BTW, surely you know that the English language is constantly evolving. After all, not so long ago gay had a completely different meaning than it does today. I can easily imagine certain people back then having similar objections to the misuse of that word as you are having now.
Randy is an extremist ultraliberal educrat wingnut ideologue.

It’s like that line in “Blast from the Past.” Somebody told Brendan Fraser’s character, who had been raised in a fallout shelter, that another character was “gay.”
He turned to the other character, full of encouragement, and said, “Well, good for YOU.”
Nothing like keeping a friend’s spirits up.

How about “The Jerk” in which Steve Martin was offered a job (very subtle movie reference).
Brad, I was referring to Coulter’s comment about a democrat(ic) candidate, Edwards.
    Peace.

    Brad,
So the obsessive reporting about Governor Sanford’s political contributions last fall was overblown as well?

Not following you there, “Sand Hill.” What obsessive reporting, and what do the governor’s political contributions have to do with the subject(s) at hand?
Randy, you got me there. And I thought I knew my movie trivia.

    “Brad Warthen”,
The obsessive reporting last fall criticizing the Governor for accepting political donations from out of state donors. The Democrats in South Carolina tried to make hay of this during the campaign.
Now the same Democrats are hosting a fundraiser in DC aimed at gathering money from out of state donors.
I just note this for the record, the next time Joe Erwin or his replacement send out press releases criticizing Republican candidates for accepting donations from people who do not reside in South Carolina.

“Faggot.” OK. My eyesight is fading; I had trouble counting the hyphens.
Just to digress completely, I wonder how that got to be a slur. “Gay” seems to me a dismissive term, like saying someone is too silly to be taken seriously. “Faggot” doesn’t sound great, and I don’t call people that, but “gay” doesn’t really seem better to me.
Better just not to talk about people’s personal predilictions, I guess.

“Brad” en la pelicula de “Jerk” el trabajo para Sr. Martin es un favor desde un mujer para un hombre. Pero, El no lo entiende que es un actividad de sexo.

OK, now I have three questions instead of two:
    — What “obsessive reporting?” Must not have been too obsessive if I forget it so easily. I remember an issue being made of Karen Floyd’s contributions, because it bore upon the extremist agenda that she kept trying to run from. Sure, those donors tend to be the same ones that support the governor, but he was going to win anyway, and he wasn’t secretive about his views.
    — What does it have to do with the subject at hand? I’m talking about word usage. You seem to be saying one party is as bad as another. You’ll get no argument here.
    — What does reporting have to do with criticism? I thought reporting (in one sense) was just something that was required by law. In another sense, it’s just telling the facts. What does that have to do with criticism? Are you saying I was critical? What did I say?

    Brad,
A “faggot” was a small twig used to light the fires that burned witches. Most witches were homosexuals. That’s how the word trickled down and became a slur.Notice how easy it is for you to use this “slur”? Homosexuals are the last minority that you’re still allowed to insult.Could you write up a list of insulting terms for blacks and Jews and post them on this blog?
“Gays” have no control over the English language.Show a little civility and see if you can control yours.

No, I don’t notice how easy it is for me to use a slur. When did I use it toward anyone? I think you’re confusing me with a certain blonde provocateur.
Or would that be “provocatresse?” I don’t know. French is Greek to me.

Brad, in your big-government ideologue fervor you devote an entire thread to whether it should Democrat or Democratic. Yet at the same time posters on this very blog seem to have severe difficulty spelling Republican. Why is that?
Rethuglican administrations like the pardoned felons of Iran-Contra.

Heh, heh. Lexie, I long ago gave up on remaining above the school yard level that the Republicans have so effectively used against the Dems.
BTW, have you noticed that another gay pornstar/escort has popped up in conservative circles?
Nothing wrong with that… except that Republicans habitually whip up homophobia as a political tool.
I hope that he doesn’t tempt the Rev. Ted Haggerty back into his wicked ways.
Of course, the first celebrated gay pornstar was Jeff Gannon. Someone in the Bush Administration seems to have appreciated his talents enough to get him a press pass under an alias.
The next administration should probably use latex gloves when opening the closets in the West Wing… especially in Rove’s office.
