So now there WILL be a debate…

No sooner had I hit the button on this last post, but this came in:

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Republican John McCain will attend debate.

Well, that simplifies the rest of this day. It makes it a little longer, and it screws up Saturday, but at least I’m not about to waste time writing a placeholder column, so that’s something…

There won’t be a debate. There will be a bull session on McCain’s taking credit for the surge and Obama saying his willingness to talk to tyrants wasn’t what he meant.

Thank you, Richard. As I’ve said all along, if you feel that you’re going to learn something new from this charade tonight it’s because you’re too lazy to look it up yourself, not because anything new is actually going to be said. The only debate that I’m half-way interested in and will possibly learn something new from is between Palin and Biden, and that’s only because Palin is still a bit of a mystery on a good many issues.

True, Tim, everybody I know seems to be decided already one way or the other, I always hear about these independents or undecideds but I never see any.
It will be interesting nevertheless to see the dynamic between the two. In general, it just seems more and more obvious to me that Obama is the more centered of the two, the guy who has the intelligence, calm rational demeanor, and overall Presidential temperament. McCain just seems all over the place, a little unstable. This whole charade of the last few days has been comical. In fact, if you factor in Biden’s loose cannon tendencies, and Palin’s deer-in-the-headlights-I-will-recite-my-bridge-story-and-my-next-door-to-Russia-line-no-matter-what-you-ask-me catatonia, Obama is so far beyond the other three in terms of inspiring confidence and showing leadership it’s off the charts.

The debates are mostly for the news media, the “I gotcha” crowd and the “see only what you want to see” bunch. But with the world situation now, it does give me a feeling of security to see McCain and know that he will be in charge of it all.

Dick Morris has an interesting take on McCain’s debate/no debate/debate stunt he pulled. According to Morris this was a ploy designed to win approval for a Republican bailout proposal that’s far more suitable to the base than the Bush/Democrat plan. It’s linked in Rassmussen.com

And now before the debate begins, can we stipulate that neither McCain nor Obama is a skilled speaker off the cuff? So neither side should be using the “well, our guy isn’t as good in debates”.
In fact, if I had the opportunity to be the moderator, I would have the first rule of the debate be:
“If you mention the other candidate, your microphone will be turned off”
Let’s measure the candidates on what they each say they will do, not on what they try to convince us the other one has said or done.
Oh, and everybody take a drink each time McCain says “My friends”.

Or how about bradblog: the drinkin’ game — every time Lee posts the word “socialism” or “muslim,” you must drink.

No worry for Obama about anyone in Big Media asking him directly about his terrorist pals like Bill Ayers or why so many of his family and friends are radical Muslims. They wanted a Democrat so bad, and now are stuck covering up for this sorry piece of garbage.

So, here I sit, one half-hour into listening to the foreign-policy debate, and Jim Lehrer has yet to ask a question even tangentially related to foreign policy.

I suspect a lot of Obama supporters are happy with his socialist agenda. They avoid discussing it because they know that it is unAmerican and repulsive.
