Here’s your Christmas Eve eve news:
- Justice rejects S.C. voter ID law (WashPost) — Looks like the SC GOP got some early coal in its stocking.
- Obama in tax victory over House (BBC) — That’s the way the Beeb sees it, anyway.
- Bomb Blasts Hit 2 Security Facilities in Syrian Capital (NYT) — The NYT says 30 killed; other sources go higher.
- Leaders honour Havel at funeral (BBC) — I felt like he got short shrift earlier in the week, with all the Kim Jong Il stuff. We should note the passing of a good guy.
- UK recession nears as services shrink (The Guardian) — Not good. Sorry, but I can’t run over there and help with some spending this time…
- Crossing the Delaware, More Accurately (NYT) — Nothing like a fun history piece. Well, history is fun to me, at least.
It’s about time to block the Voter ID bill. The Repubs want to reinstatement the poll tax in another form.
Bravo to the Justice Department!
“I am working every day to move South Carolina forward….the president and his bullish administration are fighting us every step of the way,” Haley said in a statement.”
Not sure what she means by “bullish administration”, but if protecting citizens’ right to vote is “fighting us”, then maybe you’re on the wrong side of history.
Obama will get credit for the victory, but it was the Republicans that turned Boehner around on the payroll tax/unemployment insurance extension. Apparently he listened to the loud Tea Party caucus rather than the politically-wise members of his party. And he gets to try the whole thing again in February. I [almost] feel sorry for the guy.
@j Agreed. Now we need to continue the fight against Repubs who have kept these same minorities from owning firearms for so long now.
Let’s build on this victory and work to eliminate the onerous ID requirement that keeps all of these same people from being able to protect themselves from white oppression.
No ID requirement for firearm purchases!
But why must the msm describe it as the GOP (or Boehner) “caving?” Couldn’t it be described as behaving sensibly, or compromising? It sounds as if the media are trying to stoke the fires of partisanship.
Yeah, it’s a bad idea to require ID to vote in this country. Next let’s just stop the practice of requiring an ID to do things like cash a check, use a credit card, collect government aid, drive a car, visit a medical facility, etc…
Norm, I agree but don’t feel too sorry for JB as he’s playing golf overseas (after his having to work overtime on Capital Hill) in an elegant place at the expense of some lobbying group.
@Norm–commentators on NPR were saying that Boehner, for once, did a cram down on his party–the Tea Party opposed the extension.
Everyone should watch very carefully what’s going on in the UK. With austerity measures taking effect the British economy is grinding to a halt with another recession following close on it’s heals. I would suggest to all my conservative friends this is a warning that we should avoid this austerity nonsense. If deficits are the problem then by all means raise taxes, especially on the rich but let’s not cut more on domestic spending. With the war in Iraq winding down we should be in much better shape to fund infrastructure and other necessary programs. And that should help us avoid a collapse like the British style disaster.
I just realized that when I sent out the headline and link to this post on Twitter, it was my 6,000th Tweet. Now I don’t want to Tweet anything, and mess up that perfect 000 number…
… or, I could Tweet a LOT, and get to 10,000 that much faster…
