This newsreel, brought to my attention by Burl Burlingame, has a lot of funny lines in it, but none is a bigger hoot than, “there are a lot of writing jobs on newspapers.”
I also like the part when it says that women find it hard to compete with men for hard-news reporting jobs. And it’s so true! You know why? Because there’s aren’t any freaking reporting jobs, that’s why!
I don’t think that Lois Lane would be happy writing for the society pages.
She wouldn’t have that option today. The last person I remember even knowing who did that was a woman in Wichita who bore a striking resemblance to Brenda Starr — big, red hair and everything.
Given some of the puff pieces and celebrity worship that masquerade as journalism today, I think most of “reporting” today IS the society page.
What year was this produced?
Perry White of the Daily Planet may have something to say about that.
