But I'm a creep; I'm a weirdo. What the hell am I doing reading about the BUSINESS side of music?

But I’m a creep; I’m a weirdo. What the hell am I doing reading about the BUSINESS side of music?

A few things that might spark conversation (if only this weren’t a Friday):

  1. Nikki Haley says she’ll help Obama find the money to keep Guantanamo open — Just call her NIMBY Haley from now on. This cockiness about helping POTUS find money comes from the woman who thinks we should finance roads by either a) cutting another tax by a larger amount than that needed for roads or b) taking it from other programs even though roads have their own dedicated funding source, one that hasn’t been raised for 29 years.
  2. GOP elites are now resigned to Trump as their nominee — This is very, very, extremely, awful, horrible news, if you are an American, or the resident of any other country affected by U.S. policy, which is to say, if you are an earthling.
  3. Cruz’s latest fights with fellow Republicans are a reminder: Many simply don’t like him — And see, this is why we’re in the horrible situation described in the previous item: Two things characterize Cruz: Tout le monde sees him as the only guy to stop Trump, and he is a guy who causes normal Republicans to say such things as what the former speaker of the House said — that he “never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life.” If only there were a sane option out there that leading Republicans didn’t hate… someone like… I don’t know… KASICH?
  4. Radiohead’s corporate empire: inside the band’s dollars and cents — Disregard! I was hoping this would be about Radiohead’s upcoming new album or something, but it turns out the headline was accurate: It really was about business and money. Bleh. I’d just as soon watch “Vinyl” as read about that…
  5. Pentagon Disciplines 16 for Errors Tied to Afghan Hospital Bombing — This is the one back in October, not the latest one. The latest one wasn’t us.

Yeah, I know the “Nimby Haley” item is kind of old. I actually started this Open Thread late yesterday, but had to stop and didn’t get back to it until this morning… and I still wanted to comment on that…

And yes, we SHOULD keep them in the brig. That’s what brigs are for.

If the proposal was to seat them at tables at 82 Queen or 39 Rue de Jean, I might have a problem. But this is what brigs are for…

And also because it’s against Obama.

This is a national defense issue; not the place for petty politics.

Not sure WHY the Feds would need a state’s approval anyway. Wasn’t a choice about Savannah River Site; not about Chas Navy base closure. Etc. Or even what happens at Ft Jackson…

Always release bad P.R. news on Friday afternoon. Good marketing strategy there.

Actually, I didn’t see that as bad news. It was bad news when it happened; this was about holding people accountable for it.

But since you mention it… It’s weird how people ignore news at this time of the week.

I’ve always thought it really irrational that the Sunday paper had better readership than Saturday. Saturday generally has WAY more news.

So much news used to happen on Friday afternoons that it really frustrated me when I was the news editor of The Jackson Sun in Tennessee.

In those days, we were an afternoon paper Monday-Friday, meaning our last edition went to bed at 1:30 p.m. But we had no paper on Saturday, and a morning paper on Sunday. So, back long before the Web, we had this long, dead time when we couldn’t tell the readers what was going on.

Maddening… I used to think, If only we published on Saturday, I could put out an awesome paper that day…

But maybe I would have felt better back then if I knew what I now know from blogging, which is that readers just check out on Fridays and stop paying attention.

I don’t know why. Is it that they’re just so eager to get away and do whatever it is they do on weekends?

I view Hillary and Bernie as being much worse situations for the country than Trump. At least other countries respect The Donald, which can’t be said for who’s held the office the past 8 years.

No. Reagan had been the governor of our largest state, and had not embarrassed himself in that office.

I didn’t like Reagan, and I really hated to see him beat Jimmy Carter, who I had always liked.

But there’s no comparison between him and Trump. Trump is so completely unqualified, so clueless, so beyond the pale, that we’re talking about someone in a completely different category from anything I have ever seen.

Sure, I worried about Reagan’s competence in foreign affairs, just because I worried about the way he oversimplified things. But the things that he oversimplified were by and large things I broadly agreed with, in terms of America’s role in the world.

In those days — in fact, up until this moment in our history — there was a consensus with regard to the world, and there was just disagreement about methods and nuances about what we emphasized.

Trump is a guy who does not understand ANY of it. He is so wrong about things that it’s hard to know where to start in explaining why he’s wrong. Because if people don’t get that he’s wrong, there’s a long of very fundamental things that they are not getting. It’s almost like he and his supporters speak a whole other language, and it’s hard to translate certain concepts into that language…

Gov Haley has done a few things well, but I’m not convinced she has done anything better than any good governor would have in the same circumstances. She does one thing especially well – grandstanding. It’s the politician’s favorite currency.

Moral of the Clinton List. Avoid being friends with the Clintons at all costs. The mortality rate of friends, acquaintances, casual friends, and even the 7 degrees of separation variety is very high even though they can all be explained with facts supporting the actual cause for each one’s demise. Just like some of the murder mystery shows when the main character shows up, someone dies. I asked my wife one night long ago when she was watching one of the shows why the main character wasn’t investigated because everywhere she went, boom!, a dead body showed up within 5 to 10 minutes.

Just like the conspiracy theories that abound about GWB being in on the 9/11 attacks and actually supporting them. Total tin foil hat conspiracy BS!
