The Midnight Ride of the Wiz: Green Diamond is coming!

The project formerly known as Green Diamond may have caught its opposition napping when it struck like a thunderbolt with its latest, wildest plan — which actually involves Cayce doing a sort of Anschluss across the river, seizing part of Richland County — but it’s waking up now.

Like a latter-day Paul Revere, Bob Wislinksi has apparently run hither and yon, and is preparing his ramparts as we speak. He seems to have roused the yeomanry of Riverland Park to take a stand tomorrow:

*Riverland Park neighborhood leaders and concerned Cayce citizens will
hold Thursday news conference to voice opposition to Cayce’s proposed
annexation of Green Diamond property*

A group of leaders from the Riverland Park neighborhood in Cayce and
other concerned citizens in the community will hold a news conference at
11:00 am at the Riverland Park Neighborhood Center (also known as the
Riverland Park Police Sub-station) located at the corner of Riverland
Drive and Brookcliff Drive in Cayce.

At the news conference, Riverland Park residents and other Cayce
community leaders will discuss their opposition to Cayce City Council’s
recently announced plans to annex the controversial Green Diamond
development into Cayce.

The Riverland Park neighborhood has been identified by FEMA as the Cayce
neighborhood most likely to be flooded by Green Diamonds levees, should
they ever be constructed.

Besides Riverland Park’s vulnerability, other participating neighborhood
and community leaders will discuss additional financial, infrastructure
and public liability reasons why the preliminary annexation should be
opposed by every Cayce citizen, regardless of where they live. The group
will lay out a general plan to beat the ill-begotten annexation plan.

I have the distinct feeling that all of this is going to get more interesting before it gets dull again.

If they were drowning themselves, it would be there problem (thankyou for something, all you libertarians). But they are perfectly willing to drown someone else. In a libertarian universe, the strongest (money is power) wins. And if they own it they can do what they wish (no government interference in private property use). All I can say is “No.”

If the Green Diamond people pass out enough money to Cayce’s mayor and City Council, they may have a chance in getting this project approved. (unless the people of Cayce start calling their councilmen)

When Borroughs bought this land years ago and then was denied the original plan to build the “dream complex”, they should have been smart enough not to buy wetlands to build the complex. These are low county people. They know all about wetlands. They thought they could come to Columbia ans pull the wool over the city slickers and hicks in Columbia.
Thank goodness eyes were open before it was too late and they were denied the right to build on the flood plain.
New Orleans is a prime example that you do not build anything below water level. If you build or live in harms way, sooner or later harm will come your way. You can look around this country at recent events as recent as this week in Washington and Oregon and see what mother nature can do to destroy people, dams, roads etc.
The land should be donated as a tax deduction from the owner to Richland and Lexington County to remain as is for the enjoyment of all the people and mother nature that lives in the area.

Out of all the many issues we’ve debated on Brad’s blog this one is the least debatable. More than Iraq, health care, energy immigration or even the merits of our Lt. Governor. I continue to scratch my head trying to figure out why the State editorial page does not come out more stridently in opposition to this totally disgusting development.

Abolishing the relatively recent subisidy of Federal Flood Insurance would put an end to schemes like “Green Diamond”, a long with a lot of other risky building on our coasts.
Return to the free market and let the buyers pay for their risks. Green Diamond will never happen without government subsidies and protection from lawsuits and flood losses.

Now there’s a libertarian idea I can fully support.

Free market capitalism and individual responsibility have solutions to a lot of other problems which government can only make worse.
