The One’s prime-time address to the nation

Dig the faux Oval Office! Better than the faux Greek temple, even! He couldn’t have the Brandenburg Gate, but his folks sure can whip up a presidential-looking set, can’t they? Gotta spend that money on something, and Obama’s opted to burn some of it on a 30-minute Address To The Nation in Prime Time. Hey, why bother actually becoming president, if you can do cool stuff like this when you haven’t even been elected?

Anyway, I’m gonna watch the rest of it now. I just thought I’d give y’all a place to comment on it.

Obama Hid His Father’s Socialism From Readers

If there is a mystery at the heart of Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father, one thing is not left a mystery, the fact that Barack Obama organized his life on the ideals given to him by his Kenyan father. Obama tells us, “All of my life, I carried a single image of my father, one that I .. tried to take as my own.” (p. 220) And what was that image? It was “the father of my dreams, the man in my mother’s stories, full of high-blown ideals ..” (p. 278) What is more, Obama tells us that, “It was into my father’s image .. that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself.” And also that, “I did feel that there was something to prove .. to my father” in his efforts at political organizing. (p. 230)
A bit of research at the library reveals the answers about Barack Obama’s father and his father’s convictions which Obama withholds from his readers. A first hint comes from authors E. S. Atieno Odhiambo and David William Cohen in their book The Risks of Knowledge (Ohio U. Press, 2004). On page 182 of their book they describe how Barack Obama’s father, a Harvard trained economist, attacked the economic proposals of pro-Western ‘third way” leader Tom Mboya from the socialist left, siding with communist-allied leader Oginga Odinga, in a paper Barack Obama’s father worte for the East Africa Journal. As Odhiambo and Cohen write, “The debates [over economic policy] pitted .. Mboya against .. Oginga Odinga and radical economists Dharam Ghai and Barrack Obama, who critiqued the document for being neither African nor socialist enough.”

Wow, this post is giving me a real deja vu. Maybe something similar to this post happened during the primaries, Obama’s speech on race or some such.
You know, Brad says, “Anyway, I’m gonna watch the rest of it now. I just thought I’d give y’all a place to comment on it.”
Then Lee posts a link-backed objection to obama, and somebody posts, “Needs more pie charts.”
Anyway, I thought Obama’s half-hour was too vanilla. Everything about him’s too vanilla, in contrast to Ayers and Wright.
    It doesn’t add up.
Maybe it needs more pie charts.

  3. wtf

Ah yes, Lee. Don’t bother thinking for yourself. Copy & paste all the way without ever seeing the lies.
What was the a big redistribution program in the United States in the last 30 years? Let’s ask former adviser to Nixon, Ford and Reagan David Gergen.
…”You know, Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican, was very much an advocate of what’s called progressive taxation. Ad that is the rich pay more than the poor in terms of taxes.
Now, one of the most effective popular programs we’ve had in the last three decades. It’s called the earned income tax credit. It’s a program whereby, if you’re a working person, a working couple and you’re below the poverty line, the government will actually give you money. That’s a redistributed program. It’s a program which takes money from the upper classes and gives it to the lower — to the working poor.
Now who started that program? The earned income tax credit? RONALD REAGAN.
That’s right. Rush Limbaugh’s hero and life long champion was a socialist by McCain’s definition.
You know what else Reagan did the first years in office during a recession? He raised taxes. I bet Rush forget to tell you that one as well.
So when McCain says he wants to implement the policies of Reagan, isn’t he too saying he wants to a be socialist and raise taxes?
I mean, if socialism was good for the father of the modern Conservative Republican Party, then who is John McCain to differ with?
Check your facts and not your free-will.

  4. Rich

What a heartwarming presentation! True, Obama did not answer criticisms, attack his opponent, or give us nuts-and-bolts specifics.
But he did communicate a concern for our plight in this economy and he connected his upbringing and personal life experience to our own in a very real way. The man is the embodiment of American pluralism and pluck.
Although I usually make my voting decisions on the basis of who will best advance the social-democratic agenda I espouse, I think Obama actually connected with how I FEEL about things, not just what I think about them.
Too bad the cranky, erratic, and flailing McCain campaign has little in the way of a response.
McCain will probably lose, and the Republican Party is going to get the spanking of its life. They should just disband. Lincoln would be rolling over in his grave if he knew what his party–the party of free soil, free labor, and freedom for African Americans–has become: a party of religious fanatics, ignoramuses, cultural yahoos, and the cynical rich people who dominate them.

  5. Jennifer Mullen

I don’t understand why Republicans continue to call Senator Obama “The One” – none of his supporters has ever used that term. Why do you rely on mocking the man and spreading lies about him? Is it maybe because you are obviously wrong on the issues? Crawl back into your caves, please, and let us get to work cleaning up another one of your messes.

  6. Norm Ivey

The video wasn’t about Obama so much as it was about the people he chose to highlight. These are real Americans in very real circumstances. And it is this empathy coupled with the vision Obama offers America that has moved so many of us to support him. I think the commercial was probably effective in reaching undecideds (if there really are any left). The Republicans have failed to create that empathy or share their vision in a way that resonates with me. Some of the money he burned tonight was mine. I consider my donations a sound investment.

  7. p.m.

Jennifer, Oprah Winfrey introduced Obama as “The One” years ago. I have seen the videotape. If you would Google it, you could probably find it.
If you want to believe whatever you want to believe based on your ignorance, feel free. But you’re just making yourself look stupid.
And, thank you, m’am, but I don’t live in a cave, and I’m not a Republican, and this mess belongs as much or more to Pelosi’s Democratic House than to Republicans.
In fact, I might liken Pelosi’s House to a cave.

  8. p.m.

Rich, you sound like a Carolina fan after Spurrier showed up, or after Holtz showed up, preaching doom and gloom and shame for Clemson.
Yet the Tigers are 7-2 against the Gamecocks since.
And Obama hasn’t won the election yet.
If his half-hour tonight wasn’t just a big waste of time and campaign funds, the voters it convinced are the ignoramuses, not the Republicans.
That was just his stump speech imposed on video that showed him being worshiped by elderly white people.
Here’s hoping America resents him interrupting prime time for a half hour of Obama does Lawrence Welk.

  9. Greg

This is the biggest swindle in history. The people that are voting for him know next to nothing about him and cannot point to anything that he has “run, or done” that says he should be president, save hiring David Axelrod to run his campaign.
Axlerod knows that, as a culture, we look to one dimensional TV stars for inspiration. He knows that as a post Christian country we are , as humans, looking for someone or something to believe in. He gave it to us, and with a compliant press….he has succeeded in having the masses believe in Obama as if he were a god able to solve any problem, correct any woe.
I have studied him at length, and believe he is a socialist. While I would never vote for a socialist, I respect any voters’ right to do so. The pity is that most have no idea what or who they are voting for…and I suspect they will be very surprised when Obama and Company are elected.
Through this we will pass. One way or the other, the truth will come out.

  10. jfx

    But…Greg…
Axelrod hasn’t pitched Obama as a god. He’s pitched as an American with a compelling biography and a good head on his shoulders who’s willing to listen to people and work to get problems resolved.
Obama and Axelrod have run a campaign that is perceived as significantly more positive, even-tempered, and coherent than McCain’s. They’ve been competent and organized. Yes, people do respond to this, largely because we’ve been witness to so much incompetence in our current President, and so much blubbering and negativity from the McCain campaign and its apologists.
The “liberal media” follows the attractive story, that brings readers and viewers. Yes, it’s true, straight fact reporting is hard to find, and also hard to sell. Remember how the “liberal media” jumped on Clinton for his Oval Office Lewinsky BJ, and stayed on him? You could just as easily say the “compliant press” carried George W. Bush into the Presidency, as part of the residual fallout from the mountain of negative press against Clinton (although much of it was deserved, based on Clinton’s own actions and lies). The point I’m making is, it’s too easy to blame the press.
Also, I don’t think you understand Socialism. You “believe” Obama’s a socialist. Gee, belief is a strong thing. You are accusing others of being hoodwinked and falling for Axelrod’s propaganda…yet I didn’t hear the word Socialist start popping around until about a month ago, and now it’s McCain, Palin, Limbaugh, Hannity, every day spouting “Socialist! Socialist! Socialist!” I think you fell for that propaganda and got hoodwinked.

  11. greg

I have a somewhat radical past. I know all about Obama and his type. I have sat with those types for years, and I know of what I speak. They despise the “burbs” and all the white middle class people in them…as are the offspring of dull workers, not the elite.
They spread dooom and gloom and then present themsleves as the only solution.
Oh yes, I know this crowd very very well…and I can tell you that the average person voting for Obama has not a clue who he is or what he thinks.
I notice you did not mention, in you defense of Obama…anything about what he has done, what’s he run. Shameless self-promotion does not count…er, until now.
PS…I do not listen to Rush, etc.

  12. bud

Greg uses yet another ridiculous talk radio talking point:
“The people that are voting for him know next to nothing about him and cannot point to anything that he has “run, or done”.
Is there no end to this silly nonsense? Seriously Greg is this the best you folks can do, mimic Rush, Sean and Bill O. Obama has been campaigning for 2 years. He’s laid out his proposals for health care, taxes, foreign policy and virtually everything else. He’s a magnificent speaker with a compelling personal story. His senate record is a good one, even if it’s a bit short. He’s worked with Dick Luger to secure loose nukes. He’s oppossed the Iraq war and has voted with Bush 41% of the time. That’s hardly someone to be fearful of. And it certainly doesn’t fit in with the socialist mantra that Governor “Alaska should be a separate country” Palin spouts on the campaign trail. Really, this stuff is so superficial and void of any facts.
The race remains close but if Obama can hang on he will restore confidence to the American people, turn the economy around and make us a safer and more respected nation. I’m a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama. Everyone who loves America should get behind this incredible individual and vote for him. Don’t be fooled by the Limbaugh lies or the Hannity spin. It’s all nonsense.

  13. Lee Muller

Greg is using his personal experience with other socialists he has known, who have the same negative ideas as Obama. As a student in the 1960s, I met a lot of these socialists, too. Many of them became Democrat politicians, liking money, but still mouthing Marxism and believing they were noble reformers.
I posted references to Barack Obama’s father’s book, and his papers at Stanford U library, and a book by two scholars on Barack Obama’s influence on Kenyan socialism.
I posted some of the core ideas of Obama’s proposed socialism: redistribution of property from Europeans and Asians to blacks, and disenfranchising Europeans and Asians.
I posted a 2006 photo of Barack Hussein Obama (the candidate) campaigning with the Kenyan socialist dictator, Oginga Odinga.
Talking about the EIT created by Nixon (not Reagan) is a crazy attempt at diversion from the fact that Obama is a radical socialist.

  14. Lee Muller

Obama’s infomercial took the spotlight off him, because he cannot withstand scrutiny.
Joe the Plumber came clean about his life and honestly answered everything the press tried to smear on him.
Why can’t the press ask Barack Obama to sit down and come clean?

  15. GW

I can’t wait to see McCain’s half hour video on how he graduated almost dead last in a class of 900 from the Naval Academy, got into pilot training, crashed 4 military aircraft, was complicit in the fire on the Forrestal, and managed to have a deadly car crash covered up by the Navy. It will also include his value system that called for him to abandon his ailing wife in a time of need and chase a rich, blond woman. It will include scenes of him following people to the gates of hell that he is so proud of. We will also be treated to his perception of being adored by veterans who in fact give him a very low rating because of his lack of support over the years for veterans issues. We will also be titillated by his calling us “my friends, my friends.”

  16. GW

By the way, Oginga odinga, was an antagonist of Jomo Kenyatta, the puppet dictator of Kenya, who died in 1979. Oginga odinga died in 1996 and could not possibly have been photographed with Barack Hussein Obama in 2006. You people need to get your facts straight before you spew all of your venomous crap.

  17. GW

Lee, Joe the Plumber is a phony creep that has become the mascot for the McCain campaign. Here is a man who is the bain of licensed craftsmen who play by the rules by getting qualified to practice their trade, and pay their taxes. Joe trumped up a story about buying his boss’s business. Now he is discussing McCain foreign policy in the media. The fact that McCain has wrapped his arms around this creep shows you the abysmal lack of judgement that McCain has.

  18. p.m.

You said the magic words, bud.
    “Void of any facts.”
    The Obama image.
He told Bill O’Reilly that he spent 20 years attending Jeremiah Wright’s church twice a month, yet in all that time, he never heard such rhetoric as Wright unleashed in his GD America sermon.
Yeah, that’s right, in listening to Wright speak almost 500 times, he never heard the man say anything controversial.
A man who lies about what he hears in church would lie about anything, bud. What monster lies beneath Obama’s faux innocence?

  19. Lee Muller

Joe the Plumber isn’t the only man with the American Dream that Obamanoids hate.
Obama followers think all small businessmen and those with blue collar jobs are “creeps”.
GW, why don’t you come clean about what you personally expect to get from Obama, how he is going to do it, and who he is going to have to screw over to make you happy.
Why can’t you face and discuss the details of Obama’s socialist proposals and the sordid friends?
Pick one of the Democrat proposals:
    * Hand Iraq and Afghanistan over to the Taliban and Al Qaeda
    * Government seizure of 401-k plans
    * Government seizure of medical care
    * Government disarming honest law-abiding Americans
    * Tax increases on everyone with a real job or business, to fund handouts to the lazy and losers who are Core Democrats.
    * Diverting 2/3 of the money spent on the war on terrorism to foreign aid to Africa

  20. slugger

This race for president boils down to two facts that Obama has promised if he is elected president.
He will take from the middle and upper class and raise the standard of living for the poor to the tune of reparations.
The fact number two is that he and a democratic congress will pass laws that give monthly support checks to those that he is expecting to vote for him.
If this does not scare you into voting for McCain, heaven help you.
We can talk about all the facts concerning the past history of Obama which clearly points to the fact that he is a socialist/communist. He cannot change his past. That is history. What he wants first is to be the first black president. Then he wants to make all black people equal to whites economically. That is his real goal.

  21. Jimmy

Joe the Plumber as a person is irrelevant. What Obama said to him is the reason this is still a race and not completely over.
McCain finally found a point that undecideds are listening to. “Spread the wealth” (from Obama’s mouth) will not sit well with those that are still pondering their vote. If they were going to jump on the Obama train because they think he will change the world, they would have already. They are closely analyzing this and there enough out there to easily swing this election.
I still think Obama wins because of his lead in VA, NC and Ohio. But if McCain wins Fl, NC and Va, watch out. This thing is far from over.
If McCain does win, I think we can all agree that polling data as akin to voodoo. It is beginning to look like that anyway.

  22. James D McCallister

If only the GOP ticket had something to say instead of needing to find something the opponent said on which to run, then McCain/Rove 2008 might have made this a race. (McCain 2000 most certainly would have made this a real contest.)
Obama, whatever he may be, mouths platitudes that inspire. McCain 2008 mouths tired old talking points. That’s a big diff in a country whipped after 8 years of malfeasance and incoherence from the guy supposedly in charge.

  23. pam,greenwood

When a party has no good ideas or solutions you slander your opponent. Just like Brad , you know ” the one ” comment. The consistent theme from the RNC and the McCain campaign is fear and hate . And , this paper’s editorial board enforces that theme. Sad to think that some in this state are unable to look to the future .

  24. Lee Muller

At least you admit that you don’t care “whatever he is”.
And you confess to being inspired by empty “platitudes” from Obama.
That is step 1 to recovery from being a dimwit cult follower of a fascist demagogue.
If you want to see where the Democrats would take us, look at the last two years:
    * Democrat mortgage program crashes the entire banking system
    * Democrats run up more deficits in 2 years of Pelosi in control than in the previous 6 of Bush and the GOP having some power.
    * Democrats plans to abolish 401-k plans after the election
    * Democrats filing legislation to outlaw most firearms, many SUVs, and raise taxes to pre-Reagan levels
The Great Depression began 3 years after the stock market crash in 1929, when taxes on “the rich”, those making over $100,000 a year, were raised from 25% to 55%.
Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

  25. Brad Warthen

Wow. As cool as Obama is — and he IS cool, all the time — some of his supporters are VERY emotional.

Jennifer and Pam are so worked up they apparently think I’m a Republican. Talk about emotion overriding the higher faculties…

p.m., thanks for pointing out the painfully obvious, which is that I got the thing about "The One" from that font of Republican bile, Oprah…

Where are we when we can’t even use the smallest bits of irony in our public discourse?

Come on, folks — Phillip gets it. He’s for Obama, and he can josh about the cheesy background music (which I didn’t notice; leave it to Phillip). I just noticed the cheesy set, which someone was careful to make ALMOST exactly like the Oval Office, but enough unlike it to allow for plausible deniability.

Folks, cheesy is cheesy. Joe the Plumber — cheesy. Pandering with a gas tax cut — cheesy. Picking Sarah Palin — cheesy (although, to quote from the movie Phillip cites, I find myself "strangely attracted…"). Maverick this, maverick that — cheesy.

Now, you Obama supporters — make some ironic comments about your guy. Come on, you can do it. Look, this guy’s going to be the president, and I just won’t be able to stand four years of y’all being so deadly earnest…

  26. Tim C

Wow! Name calling and continued posting of incorrect facts by Lee, Greg. p.m. and the Gang. And Brad sarcastically calling Obama the One. The campaign funds generated are from the people. Hundredes of Thousands of citzens have donated time and money because they believe in the possibilities. This is a bottom up organizational movement. Give Obama credit for organizing, directing, leading and managing it. He hired the right people and allowed them to do their jobs. That is leadership. Rather than focus on name calling and false accusations, his campaign has focused on policy and the direction he plans to lead us. Instead of debating the issues, from the McCain campaign and supporters we get “Socialist”, “Marxist”, “communist” “terrorist” (Un-American” and the like thrown at us incorrectly and disrespectfully. Leadership is about respect of others. Leadership is about inclusion and finding common ground. Please tell me how John McCain plans to do this when he has run the most vile, disrespectful, hateful and dishonorable campaign since George Wallace’s in 1968? Or maybe he just will turn it over to Palin to handle(wink, wink).

  27. bud

Jennifer and Pam are so worked up they apparently think I’m a Republican.
    -Brad
Why on earth would anybody think that? If it looks, sounds and acts like a duck then it must be a duck. Only diehard Republicans seem to be fawning over McCain right now.

  28. Lee Muller

How do you like Obama’s proposal for a Civilian Defense Force, “at least as large as the military..” – Obama, July 2, 2008
Maybe he should include some beer hall music in his video ads.

  29. Lee Muller

How do you like Obama’s proposal for a Civilian Defense Force, “at least as large as the military..” – Obama, July 2, 2008

  30. Brad Warthen

Let’s see if I’ve got this straight. I write:

Folks, cheesy is cheesy. Joe the Plumber — cheesy. Pandering with a gas tax cut — cheesy. Picking Sarah Palin — cheesy (although, to quote from the movie Phillip cites, I find myself “strangely attracted…”). Maverick this, maverick that — cheesy.

… and then I write the Flame of Alaska post.

Then I come back here, and find myself accused of “fawning over McCain right now.”

Look, can’t we get together in the same universe for just a little while, and have a discussion based on the same actual reality? Maybe y’all could try arguing with what I actually say, rather than your inventions?

Folks, I’ve watched once-reasonable people get a little bit more out there day by day, and it’s disturbing. Will everybody calm down once it’s all over Obama’s won? I mean, I know these folks would go off the deep end if Obama lost, but we know that’s not gonna happen, right? Chill. Lighten up. Look around you…

  31. Lee Muller

Meanwhile, read about Obama and Pelosi’s plans to roll over your retirement account into a government account.
Or about Obama’s father, the socialist advisor to communist dictators in Kenya, an advocate of taking from “rich Europeans and Asians” and spreading the wealth to poor natives.
    Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
    http://blog.mises.org/archives/008007.asp

  32. p.m.

Tell you what, Tim C. If you can prove that one fact I posted on this thread was incorrect, I’ll issue a public apology.
When will you guys see that where Obama is concerned (pardon me, Ms. Stein), there is no there there?

  33. Lee Muller

Do any of you Democrats want to be some real money on the socialism of Obama and Pelosi?
    My bets:
    * Bet his appointees are full of socialist radicals from the 1960s, and professional racial agitators.
    * Bet that they will try to pass more gun registration, confiscations and bans.
    * Bet they will try to take your 401-k plans away from you and put them into “government managed accounts”.
    * Bet they raise taxes and cause an immediate recession.
    * Bet they continue to run the largest deficit spending in history, as they have the last 2 years.
    * Bet Obama tries to set up his own armed, domestic military, composed of urban black youth, as a Civilian Defense Force.
    * Bet Obama tries to create more “slavery reparations” programs for his black supporters, paid for by taxes on his villains, “the rich whites and Jews”.
    Bet me he won’t.
But remember, these are promises he has already made to his supporters, so tell me why you think he will betray them and not deliver.

  34. Phillip

Good stuff, Lee! Are you sure you’re not a writer for the Colbert Report?
I especially liked the Civilian Defense Force composed of “urban black youth”. I guess that’s your Halloween contribution, i.e., we’re supposed to be scared. Didn’t you know the rest? He’s confiscating guns from all white hunters in the South and distributing them to gangsta’s in the cities.
Actually I hear around these parts they’ll be garrisoned in downtown Lexington, with a naval component permanently floating on Lake Murray.

  35. Lee Muller

Brad won’t let me post the links to Obama’s July 2 speech, which calls for a Civilian Defense Force “at least as large, well-armed, and funded as the military”.
Don’t you imagine only his followers will be allowed to join his domestic military force?

  36. Tim

I find it rather humurous that many of you Obama supporters whine about the vile name-calling from the McCain campaign, yet I haven’t heard a word from any of you during the past eight years when Bush was given perhaps the most disrespect of any president in history. In fact, some of you continue to disrespect the man out of one side of your mouth while condemning McCain’s campaign out the other side (and let’s not even get into the disrespect that many of you give to Sarah Palin). Seems to me that you only care about the name calling when it concerns your guy. So forgive me that I don’t really find your whining convincing.
Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck ’08 – Hey, they’ve got just as good of ideas as the other two…

  37. bud

Bush got far more respect than he deserved. He was a liar, hypocrit and horrible excuse for a president.

  38. Tim

Bud, thank you for illustrating your hypocrisy for us. I can’t believe it was that easy to prove my point. Next time you whine like a baby about McCain’s campaign I’ll know definitively it’s just because you’re an opportunistic, partisan hack; not because of any genuine concern you have for what’s actually being said.
You’re not just as bad as Lee, you’re worse.

  39. Lee Muller

Since I have never been a Republican, and did not think McCain was a strong candidate, and I post facts, please don’t use my name in the same sentence with a non-thinker like ‘bud’.
You’re right about bud being so quick to offer himself up as an example of mindless Democrat bigotry.

  40. Lee Muller

In his July 2 speech, Obama left his prepared text and started rambling on about all the new “volunteer forces” he was going to create for “national service” to replace the military. He vowed to spend $150 BILLION a year on them, including a huge National Security Force.
“Because the future of our nation depends on the soldier at Fort Carson, but is also depends on the teacher in East LA, the nurse in Appalachia, the after-school worker in New Orleans…”
“We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”

  41. Lee Muller

Suppressed video – Obama wants to bankrupt coal industry.
Obama is telling moderate voters that he
“supports clean coal” technologies, but he has been telling the environmental extremists that he would use carbon taxes and regulations to ensure that no more coal or nuclear plants are built – not just for generating electricity, but for heat, making steel, making glass, etc.
Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview:
“The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It’s just that it will bankrupt them. ”
    hotair.com/archives/2008/11/03/video-of-obama-coal-bankruptcy/
Joe Biden has also said the “there is no such thing as clean coal”.
On the rope line after an event in Maumee, OH (Sept 2008), Biden told an environmental activist who questioned why coal is necessary given clean, effective alternatives like wind and solar, “we’re not supporting clean coal.” – FOX News video 9/23/2008 and in archives
