Some suggestions:

  1. Gaza truce holds as Israel withdraws — And the world holds its breath…
  2. Russian Gang Amasses Over a Billion Internet Passwords — Whoa. That’s a big number. And it makes me wonder about something: In Russia, how do you tell the difference between a “gang” and the people who run the country? It really struck me that, when the West wanted to punish Russia, it went after Putin’s friends and associates. Sort of the way you go after the mob, rather than a modern government.
  3. US general killed by Afghan soldier — Fifteen others were wounded in this “green on blue” attack.
  4. Scientists may have cracked the mystery of the giant Siberian crater — In case you were sitting up nights worrying about that.
  5. Rosetta spacecraft set to rendezvous with comet — I was wondering why The Guardian was playing this up bigger than U.S. sites. Because it’s a European probe. Duh.
  6. Kim Murphy, former Lexington-Richland 5 board member, files suit against district — OK, how about a show of hands — how many people wish Kim Murphy would go away and stop bothering us?

That last one was the only interesting thing I could find locally. Maybe y’all can do better…

Unfortunately the Arial cartoon badly the missed an important dynamic in the ongoing feud in Gaza. The UN schools are being used as shelters for the displaced Palestinians. The UN officials repeatedly informed Israel that these schools were shelters. Yet Israel targeted them anyone. While it’s true that some vacant schools have been used by Hamas to launch missiles the UN has condemned that action. The attacks by Israel on the UN schools clearly goes beyond any legitimate self-defense purpose. It is therefore not reasonable to believe any longer that Israel is not targeting civilians. What we have here is war by two angry parties who see each other as monsters. Egypt has stopped it’s unqualified support of Hamas. The US needs to do the same with Israel.

      That’s a non sequitur, bud.

I hardly agree about everything Israel does in the West Bank and Gaza, but there is one villan here. Hamas.

Although this is old news it is nevertheless important to continue to point out how much the US economy is improving. The Friday jobs report showed an increase in jobs for July along with a sharp upward revision for June. Thanks to a big increase in the job participation rate, the latest go-to statistic for conservatives, the U3 unemployment rate did edge upward slightly. Even the GDP growth rate was a solid 4%. It’s becoming harder and harder to find ANY statistic that’s not moving in the right direction.

Perhaps the biggest danger we face is a premature end of easy money by the Fed if pressured by the inflation fear-mongers. Another possible problem area is the emerging real estate bubble in China that’s going to pop big time soon. But as it stands now, by all accounts the President’s economic policies have worked to create a positive economic environment. Hopefully wages will rise soon to complete a resounding economic comeback from the depths of the Bush recession. Just to remind us of the dangers of another Republican president just take a look at the horrors of the Kansas economy under the policies of libertarian governor Sam Brownback. Worst economy in the nation.

Ha ha.. good one, bud. Whatever happened to the end of the world that was going to come from sequestration and the government shutdown? We need more of a do nothing Congress to keep doing nothing. The market will sort things out.

Despite all the money spent on technology in classrooms and all the emphasis on teaching to the test, statewide PASS test scores were down in almost all areas.

“COLUMBIA Midlands students performed worse this spring on the state’s annual student achievement test than last year – mirroring a statewide decline that has some education leaders worried. Science and English language arts gave students statewide and in the Midlands the most trouble – with all eight Midlands districts declining in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding the state’s standards.”

This is not surprising to someone like me who watched three kids go through 13 years of Richland 2 schools. Technology doesn’t make kids any smarter unless it is used in the right way. Testing that doesn’t lead to changes in the classroom doesn’t either. No amount of technology or testing will alter the basic equation when it comes to successful outcomes for students: engaged parents, attentive students, and skilled teachers.
