What IS this thing?

peaking of lizards — and we were speaking of "Lizards" in the comments on a previous post — does anybody know what this is?

It was found in a bathroom in my house recently. I wondered why one of my kids called me in the middle of a meeting to tell me about it — until I got home and saw it.

That plastic container it was in is about 10 or 12 inches square. This thing was somewhere between a gecko and an iguana. Note the coins in the picture. I had hoped to catch an image of him (or her) next to the coins for size perspective as soon as it climbed out of the container. But as you can see below, it was off and under the car 10 feet away before I could get off another shot.

The opinion has been expressed that it is a salamander. I have no idea. I do know that it appeared to have gills, which does suggest an amphibian rather than a reptile.

Who knows the answer?

Wow, that sure LOOKS like him. But I could have sworn he had something that looked like gills, just back of his head (you can’t really see them in my pictures). Do skinks have gills?

Brad: I watch a lot of Jeff Corwin and the Crocodile Hunter. Thus, I am qualified to inform you that your picture is a Southern Aorta Sucking Lizard. You and your family were lucky. They jump on your throat and, using a sharp probe, thrust it down into your aorta, sucking out the blood until there’s not a drop left. Kinda like a liberal. Isn’t he a beaut?

That’s OK. I knew how to handle it. I grabbed it by the tail, told everyone to back off, and said in Australian, “Wotch owt now, this byebee is REALly dyne-gerous.”

The animal in question is indeed a broad-headed skink, a common and harmless lizard in the Southeast. Males in breeding condition, such as the one in the image, can be quite impresive.

I guess that Bob McAlsiter is back on auto-pilot, eh, Brad?
What’s your stock excuse for Kathleen Parker’s rightwing propaganda?
