Need to get this out a little early today. Here ya go:

  1. Admiral Says Oil Pipe Is Cut, a Key Step in Halting Leak (NYT) — But huge challenges remain.
  2. U.S. Citizen Was Among the Dead on the Gaza Flotilla (NYT) — Further complicating an already horrible mess.
  3. SC House approves budget plan (thestate.com) — As session grinds toward close.
  4. Imperfect Umpire Blows Pitcher’s Perfect Game (NPR) — This is getting old, but it happened after yesterday’s page.
  5. Haley blames Bauer for new allegation (thestate.com) — This one, too. Face it, I just missed this one yesterday (I wish I still hadn’t heard about it).
  6. Kan Favorite in Japan Premier Race (WSJ) — Just to keep you in the loop about what goes on in foreign parts. Naoto Kan seems certain to be the next prime minister, and he’s a guy who emphasizes the importance of the U.S. relationship.

““I disclosed to Andre Bauer several days ago that I had a one-time indiscretion with Nikki Haley,” said Marchant, an influential and well-known State House lobbyist whose clients include BlueCross BlueShield. “I told him that I didn’t want to do anything to discredit his campaign and that I would resign. He thought that that was in the campaign’s best interest. He appreciated my straightforwardness.” ”

Huh? Why would Marchant see the need to disclose at all? Having done so, then why resign? How would his having had an encounter w/ another candidate years before have any negative impact on Bauer’s campaign?

Now, coming forward with the news might *help* Andre….but his resignation does nothing to remove a taint at all–it does seem to bolster his claim….and thus help Andre, but the fact of the affair would hardly hurt any candidate other than the one with whom it was alleged.

I don’t feel sorry for SC Republicans right now. They brought it on themselves with all this “family values” and holier than thou sherade. Sorry, no, my fire extinguisher is broken. You’ll have to ask some other independant to put out your fire. Good luck with that.

Brad, on a lighter note, great to see you have a bunch of ads right now. I guess Tony started it and now everyone has taken notice. I like your blog.

Better add a #7 about Jakie calling Obama and Haley “ragheads”. Just more typical BS from SC’s leading good ol’ boy redneck.

I think Nikki Haley has the good old boy network freaking out these days. The “I’d Rather Do It Wrong The Way My Pappy Did” crowd will probably still win out but South Carolina will lose as a result.

This kind of electoral tomfoolery will continue until the people of SC start inflicting the death penalty on flagrant practitioners. That is, making the atmosphere for them so negative within SC that they’ll take their dubious talents and move to another state.

Re #4: the focus on the ump’s blown call obscured the real question: what the heck is going on with batters this season? That would have been the THIRD perfect game in just over 3 weeks, when there have only been 20 (21 if not for the bad call) in ALL of baseball history. There were NONE between 1968 and 1981. Theories?
