Another busy day with a scarcity of posts, but here are some things that caught my eye:

  1. Feds name Dylann Roof friend as target — After reading that piece in the Post, I have to wonder what the charge could be. There must be something that we don’t know — which would not be surprising, I suppose.
  2. Hungarian Riot Police Clash With Migrants at Border Gate — Hungary seems determined to make every other country in Europe seem warm, generous and welcoming by contrast.
  3. Obamacare Enrollment Triggers Drop In The Uninsured Rate — Which is what it was supposed to do, but it’s nice to know it’s working.
  4. Budweiser Owner Woos Miller in Push to Create Beer Giant — Honestly, I don’t care if Bud buys Miller. I just liked the mental image of “Beer Giant.” Reminds me of the scene in “Strange Brew” when Bob McKenzie is trapped in the beer vat and has to drink it all to keep from drowning. Oh, you think that’s stupid? Take off, eh? You hoser…
  5. The GOP debate tonight — I’ll probably be commenting in real time on Twitter, assuming there are no technical difficulties and real life doesn’t distract me too much. I’m not going to watch the JV one.

I turned on the radio when I went out to dinner and the announcer mentioned he had the pre-debate debate on TV in the background. He said “There’s Pataki, and Santorum, and Bobby Jindal… and some short guy” Ha! And this is in North Carolina.

  2. Doug Ross

Lindsey Graham, admired for his willingness to work both sides of the aisle, just called Obama a weak Commander in Chief and the reason Putin is where he is. Don’t worry, once his campaign is over, he’ll go back to being sweet Lindsey again. At least the rest of the Republicans don’t play these games.

  3. Norm Ivey

Jindal said that we have the choice between an honest socialist on the left and lying conservatives on the right. I’m not sure that came out the way he meant it.

Watched some of the early debate. OMG. All Lindsey can talk about is war. He even worked it into a question about Kim Davis! How embarrassing.

    1. Brad Warthen

No, it’s the people trying to cash in politically on that woman who are embarrassing. I very much appreciate Lindsey’s point — that there are far more important things to talk about than some recalcitrant clerk in Kentucky…

      1. Phillip

But Pataki made the correct analogy re Kim Davis when he said “There is a place where the religion supersedes the rule of law. It’s called Iran. It shouldn’t be the United States.”

      2. Kathryn Fenner

There are far more important things to talk about when you are a happily married heterosexual male who doesn’t seem to care about those who are not….

FREEDOM of choice governs, KF. The “B’ in LGBT signifies choice rather than genetib disposition or psyhco-episode. In short, all this is political power play with less than 1% of the population predisposed to queer.

  5. Karen Pearson

The scenes I saw today of the Hungarian Police and the migrants reminded me all too much of Selma in the 60’s.

  6. Stan Dubinsky

In Saudi Arabia (and other Gulf countries), they prosecute and punish the VICTIMS of rape. Ariail doesn’t have a clue what he’s representing here.

    1. Juan Caruso

A valid point, Stan, but I cannot explain the veracity of the embarrassing (SC) underlying fact to which Ariail alludes; can you?
