John Edwards is back

Back to back e-mails this morning:

  • One of the more anachronistic anti-war groups (its stated raison d’être is to pursue a debate, a year after the fact, on whether to have a surge: Americans Against Escalation in Iraq is a major, multi-million dollar national campaign to oppose the President’s proposal to escalate the war in Iraq by sending more than 20,000 additional troops into the violent civil war between Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias.) put out a release to the following effect;

John and Elizabeth Edwards to Join Anti Iraq War Groups to Launch Multimillion Dollar Iraq/Recession Campaign
    ***Teleconference TODAY at 11 a.m. ***
WASHINGTON – Today former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth Edwards will join top anti-Iraq war leaders to announce the launch of a new nationwide, multimillion dollar campaign aimed at shining a light on the cost of war in Iraq. The new Iraq/Recession Campaign will kick off with a teleconference today at 11am.
As economic concerns weigh heavily on the minds of Americans, opposition to President Bush’s reckless war in Iraq continues to grow. The massive cost of the war in Iraq – hurtling toward one trillion dollars – has increased demand for a strategy to bring U.S. troops home. The Iraq/Recession Campaign will highlight the majority of Americans who want to see leadership on investing in critical priorities at home and establishing real security throughout the world.

… which made me think, either he’s found something other than running for president to keep him busy, or he’s started running for four years from now; let’s hope it’s the former.

  • An e-mail from The Washington Post drew my attention to a story that told of Hillary Clinton’s latest gambit, which is to channel John Edwards:

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Feb. 24 — Blasting "companies shamelessly turning their backs on Americans" by shipping jobs overseas and railing that "it is wrong that somebody who makes $50 million on Wall Street pays a lower tax rate than somebody who makes $50,000 a year," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton increasingly sounds like one of her old Democratic rivals, former senator John Edwards of North Carolina.
Eager to recapture the white, working-class voters who favored her in some of the early primaries but who have since shifted to Sen. Barack Obama, Clinton traded her usual wonky style this weekend for a fiery, populist tone in speeches in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.
Instead of giving precise policy details, she repeatedly pointed her finger skyward, declared that Americans "got shafted under President Bush" and cast herself as a fighter, as Edwards often described himself, promising to help most Americans, not just the "wealthy and the connected."

Personally, I’m hoping that next, she’ll decide to be Joe Biden. Now there’s a candidate I actually miss.

I think the only question left to be answered concerning John Edwards is will he or Ralph Nadar hold the record for the most failed attempts to be elected president.

Well, let’s see, Richard…Edwards has been an unsuccessful candidate for President twice: exactly the same number of failed attempts as Ronald Reagan until he succeeded on his third try in 1980.

If these folks are genuinely concerned about “companies shamelessly turning their backs on Americans by shipping jobs overseas”, then they should be angry about companies shipping cheap labor into the USA, from India, Mexico, and Eastern Europe, putting Americans in the unemployment lines.

To Richard Wolfe – check your facts. At two tries, Edwards isn’t even close to being considered a perennial candidate. For instance, Ronald Reagan won election in 1980 on his third try after unsuccessful attempts at the nomination in 1968 and 1976.
However, neither Reagan, Edwards, nor Nader come close to Harold Stassen, the one-time Governor of Minnesota who ran for the Republican nomination for President on nine occasions between 1948 and 1992.

John and Elizabeth Edwards genuinely care about the issues they were fighting for in the Presidential campaign. I expect we will see John take a leadership roll in continuing to fight for a number of issues. This is good news for the American people!

Lorraine, Thanks for catching that I had forgot about old Harold Stassen. I guess I am to young to remember Harold but was he as big a phoney as John Edwards?

With the latest rash of violence in Iraq we now have 2 straight months with increased civilian deaths. So does that mean the Surge has not succeeded after all? With Sadr’s militia sitting it out the latest figures are very discouraging. Even with some of the major players in the violence game taking a breather the death numbers are closing in on 700/month after dropping to about 500. That’s still a far cry from the 2,000/month we were seeing but still staggering in a country with a population about the size of Texas.
I really don’t see all this euphoria over the surge that continues to play itself out in conservative circles. Hopefully John and Elizabeth Edwards can lead a new charge to bring about a much needed change of policy that will bring our troops. That would certainly go a long way toward allowing that place to heal.

I have missed the frank clarity and common sense of the Edwardses since he suspended his campaign. I am encouraged to know he will be speaking out again, even if it is not as a candidate.
Of course the Iraq war is a huge part of our economic problems. McCain will no doubt try to obfuscate on that. Regardless of whether they will be motivated by the moral aspects of the war in Iraq, when voters consider their own best interests this November, John Edwards’ arguments will make a difference.

    Comparison of the Johns:
John E. has consistently promoted issues that would benefit the common man. He has seen the light on the issue of the day, Iraq imperialism and now looks to the future in a positive forthright manner. His consistency on domestic issues is commendable and predictable.
John M. has been anything but consistent with numerous flip-flops on a variety of issues ranging from taxes to immigration to torture. His latest proclaimations on these issues clearly underscore his ambition for his own agrandizement at the expense of any previously stated core principals. This breathtaking lack of consistency makes any claims of “straight-talk” laughable. John M. has only been consistent on one issue, that of overseas imperialist ambition. His continued support for enormous, counterproductive spending on foreign affairs shows how out of touch with reality he is as these policies continue to make us less secure and cost the lives of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.
It’s crystal clear who the real phony John is. Unfortunately the real phony may fool enough people with the help of the right-wing smear machine to become our next president. The result will be endless war, huge deficits and a population who continue to fall further and further into poverty. Let’s hope that the American people see through this charleton’s snake oil before it is too late.

To Al Qaeda, there are no “civilians”, and they don’t care. Democrats apparently don’t care, either, because they want to pull out our military and let the terrorists kill as many civilians as they please.
    Islamofascist promise us endless war.
Obama and Hillary promise to double and triple our deficit spending.
